Oscar Tankmates?

I have a 1.5" oscar currently residing in my 10-gallon tank, with an equal sized Plecostomus in the tank to keep the algae down. So far (about 2 weeks) they don't mind each other. Will this stay this way as they get older, or will they start to hate each other? They both come from Eastern South America, so may they actually be compatable in the wild? Does anyone know for sure what other fish the Oscar wouldn't eat if given the chance, so they may be able to coexist in the same tank?

Do you plan on getting anything larger than your 55g? If you don't, you can't get any other tank mates. As it is, the oscar won't be at optimal comfort in a 55, let alone with a huge pleco. And you'll probably have to add your other pleco from your 29g when it gets too big for that tank. I realize both the plecos, and your oscar are juvies, but oscars grow incredibly fast.

Sorry to sound like a downer, but it's all very true. For a single oscar, a pleco, and a tankmate (i.e. another oscar, JD, or the like) you will need at least a 90-100g tank.

SoCal, that is putting it nicely....The only sensible TM's for Oscars are....Oscars. The pleco is ok and will probably not have problems with your oscar. If you got a tank mate, later on you will need a Huge tank....125g+ and plecos grow like there is no tomorrow...so that might be needed sooner than you think..

Hi Tenor,
I have a Pacu as a tankmate to my Oscar and they get along fine. You may want to consider a Pacu once you get a much larger tank. :dance2:

Much, much, much, larger. Look for Debra Mark's tank specs. She's the only person I've seen with appropriate housing for pacus (btw, did I mention she has a 3,000g tank?).

In a large enough tank there are many fish that will live well with an Oscar, For now you need to scramble and get your 110g + tank so you can have a home for your fish in the next month or so. You can count on a well fed Oscar to grow an inch a month on average (goes in spurts) for the first year or so. Pleco's will grow 2-5 inches per year until they reach full size but growth rate depends on actual species, food levels etc. either way they will grow. Your 10g is only adequate for about 3 weeks if that long.

Debra Mark ain't the ONLY person with a tank over 2000 gallons... Someone else on AC has like a 2500 tank. His name is Tim something... or something like that... some obscure name.

But he always stocks it with tons of other fish, too...

True. There are a couple of other forum members with large enough tanks (one is more of an above ground pond, lol). Didn't mean to leave anyone out, but I couldn't think of their names, and the basic point was to get Tenor and Amerpatrt to realize that Pacus need much more space than what they have to offer at the moment (geez, that's an understatement  , lol)

Good looking out though Oddball :thm:,

Nooooooooooooo!!! I currently have two Pacu's in my 125 along with two Oscars and the Pacus are QUICKLY approaching tank buster status!! IMO, Pacu's should NOT be sold in LFS. Unless you have a MANSION with HUGE ROOMS that can be converted into a tank, leave the Pacu's at the LFS! As for tankmates, I would just have other Oscars and call it a day.

Neither pacus nor oscars should be sold in "pet stores" if you ask me... Simply for the fast that they will sell someone an oscar and 10 gallon tank.

offtopic, but kind of on topic.... I was in petsmart yesterday and someone came in asking for pirhanas... of course they have pirhana, but the sales person sold them on an oscar... people need to stop impulse buying fish that they have no idea of what they're getting into. Do some research first please..... /rant
