i notice some aquarium has blue colored backgrounds? will it work if i paint the outside glass? if so what kind of paint is good? normal paint? marine paint?

LOTS of people paint the backs of their tanks. i plan on painting mine black. spray paint works fine, just some all purpous pray paint. its best if you do it when your tank is empty. just take it outside, wrap the three other sides and bottom with plastic and tape off the back and spray in even coats, let dry between coats. it will take about 3-4 coats.

and btw, i think black looks the best. blue looks like the LFS tanks and is just tacky.

I've used spray paint and latex brushed on - and, yes, painting the tank when empty is the best policy..hehe. I've also used a painted piece of plywood and placed it against the back of the tank - same affect as painting, but easier to change if you get bored

You can use any paint in the outside of the tank, as long as you don't let any inside. However, it's preferable latex (water based) apints, since I believe there is a risk (really really low risk) of thinner damaging the silicone seals. But I'd rather go to the cautious way.

I wonder what the effect of spray paint would be on an acrylic tank??
what is your tank made of?

I have used both brush on acrylic paint and spray paint, and I vastly prefer the spray. It just leaves a better smoother-looking finish. I read somewhere to use engine body spray paint that you can pick up from any auto parts store. (I don't remember why though. Maybe it sticks better?) It has worked great for me.

That's probably enamel paint as it can withstand high heats. IMO I wouldn't use that for a fish tank, unless you plan on never taking it off :)

Another alternative is go to the local lumber yard and have a look in their scrap bin for melamine/etc. counter top in a colour you like. Duct tape to the back of the tank. Change any time you want with very little hassel.
