First off, I want to give a shout out to Biohazard whose journal posting on this subject inspired me to take on the challenge.

I purchased 4 peacock gudgeons over the last few months (2m/2f), and more recently, the largest male decided it's time to get it on.

Needless to say, he stayed cooped up in his little PVC tube for a few days, and I periodically checked the progress of the eggs. I'm a monster, I just picked the tube up and dumped him with the water and visually looked into the tube. I began to see eyeballs, and I waited a few more days and then pulled the tube completely out.

At that point, I moved it to a 10g half filled with tank water from the peacock tank. Since I already had a DIY sponge filter made with the same size PVC, I just took the cap off of the egg tube and stuck it to an elbow, promoting water flow.

Yesterday, I woke up to seeing fry scattered about the bottom of the tank. They only seem to move when I get the water moving with my turkey baster, at that point they dart around and hang in the current a bit before settling to the bottom. I hope this is normal, I have some EBR fry next door to them that do nothing but move, so this is slightly disconcerting.

There are still a few attached to the tube, I shook it up a bit to try to get them out but there are a dedicated few left in there. There are also a few that are still curled up, so I'm guessing they are just at different levels of development.

Eggs laid around 8/3, so it has been 6 days total. Temperature 76ish degrees, PH around 7.4-7.6. I did not use any peroxide or alder cones in this tank because I haven't seen any fungus on the eggs at all.

Will update with progress if anyone is interested.

I was never able to get this going...but from what I had read, it would be better to leave the dad in until they hatch.

But again, was never able to get this going!!

Good luck with the babies!!

I sat a tank up with the pair in it, using the pvc pipe for them to lay in.after i see the eggs in with the male i move the female to a extra tank and leave him to tend to the eggs after that just wait and u will see babies in the water swimming around ,then its time for dad to go to the tank with the female.and it starts all over in that tank too.Good Luck and I hope this helps.

make that about 25-30, they are all on the back side of the tank so they are hard to see, I have my 10s and 5s on a rack so they are turned width-wise to save space.

I can't tell if htey are eating or not, but I figured i'd cover all bases and I tossed in some microworms, a few squirts of green water, some bbs, and some first bites. (Not all at once)

They also have a marimo moss ball and some other random plant life going on in there, this morning they seemed to be affixed to the algae on the tank walls.

Tomorrow I'm going to do a small water change/vacuum and I'll keep a few in a specimen container and watch them to see what they can eat.

Just another update, they are more active now, swimming all over. I fed them walter worms and bbs and they seemed to be eating, or at least foraging through the worms on the bottom, although I haven't yet seen the telltale orange bellies of eating bbs.

Wow, just found this thanks to a friend linking me to it! Sounds like they are doing really well for you. :) I'm so glad I inspired someone to try these guys. They are SO beautiful. Best of luck with them!

Thanks Bio ! :)

Hopefully I'll have enough of these guys going to make them more available to aquarists in my area, we seem to be rather lacking in the more 'exotic' fw species around here.

Yeah! You should be able to get a decent price on them as well. I hear they grow very slow though, so expect to have them growing out for a while. :)
