Okay so instead of just constantly whining about the threads where people argue their opinions about these three filters, I've decided to be a little more productive and write an overall analysis of their pros and cons based upon my own experiences and the general commentary I have read on this and other forums about each product.

Naturally this is not meant to be a definitive final verdict, so I'm posting it here to encourage people to add whatever they wish.

No discussions of preferences here - please stick to just adding various pros and cons about the units and nothing more. Okay? :dance2:

Marineland Penguin / Emperor

Pros – Biowheel filtration provides for massive amounts of beneficial bacteria. There have even been reports of people jump-cycling whole new tanks simply with the addition of an old biowheel. Ease of setup and cleaning. Dependable. Somewhat higher flow rates than comparable models from other brands. Slot(s) for the addition of extra media of choice to allow expandability. Tight fitting cartridges discourage by-pass. Somewhat soft plastic resists cracking. Black color is easy to blend into the background, and doesn’t show a lot of dirt. Intake grates are soft and close fitting, discouraging long finned and weak fish from being sucked in and injured.

Cons – Expensive: both filter and cartridges. Difficult to customize. Complaints about noise compared to other filters. Complaints about biowheels stopping. Jury still out on whether biowheels are for real or just a silly gimmick. Difficult to repair due to motor being in a factory sealed housing. Cleaning can be cumbersome since the unit cannot be fully disassembled. No adjustability in flow rates except for the Emperor models; however this is not a constant sort of flow rate adjustment – it’s a “feeding” setting which simply turns down the main pump and allows for only the biowheels to continue running. You wouldn’t do well to leave it like this for more than a few minutes.

Hagen Aquaclear

Pros – Moderately priced. Widely available due to deserved popularity. Very easy to customize when it comes to types of media and media arrangement. Inexpensive to maintain and operate. Known to be extremely dependable and durable. Easy to repair since motor and impellor housing are removable. Ease of cleaning as unit can be fully disassembled. Adjustable flow rate. Clear plastic makes it easy to hide in the aquarium. Moderately quiet.

Cons – The way the media is placed in the unit is unorthodox and some people find it cumbersome to install. There is also a high by-pass rate due to the way in which the media is fitted into the unit. The clear plastic is very hard and can crack, as well as show a lot of dirt and grime. Intake grates are hard and wide-set, inviting potential trouble for bettas and weak fish. There are reports of the impellor housing being especially sensitive to the introduction of foreign matter, which can result in mechanical noises and sometimes cause motor burnout.

Tetra Whisper

Pros – Least expensive of the three. Widely available due to deserved popularity. Media is inexpensive and can be slightly customized due to the fact that it’s in a pouch form and you can add whatever you wish between the layers of floss. Tight fitting cartridge discourages by-pass. Fully adjustable flow rate. Moderately quiet. Easy to clean and repair since it can be fully disassembled. Somewhat soft plastic resists cracking. Black color is easy to blend into the background, and doesn’t show a lot of dirt.

Cons – Known to be the least durable and dependable of the three. There are many reports of these units just coming to a stop and never working again. There seems to be a small degree of quality control issues with this product, so some units’ parts can be ill-fitted and therefore quite noisy. Low flow rates compared to the others, so they tend to be less desirable for larger tanks and messier fish.

It still appears just to be opinions.

No, this is a report. A report is a combination of gathered fact and basic public opinion.

For example, stating that some people find loading an Aquaclear's media to be cumbersome is a fact - people have made such a statement. But most of what is written are hard facts - things about cost, reliability, features, flow rates, availability, design, etc.

An opinion would be me saying "I find loading this thing to be cumbersome." reporting the gathered opinions and experiences from others is simple reporting.

My gripe with the opinion notion, and the reason why I started this thread, is because I was tiring of people suggesting one unit over another based solely on their personal choices rather than offering the pros and cons so that the inquirer can make his or her own decision.

Sorry to disagree...your statements are nothing more than your opinions on the filters and not from an independent source that did objective testing.

There is nothing wrong with what you said, but it is not any more conclusive than any of the other threads where the same statements were made by others.

Hey hold the phone a second there ;) Let's examine this... (sorry I'm a bit flustered...)

"I've decided to be a..."
has been taken out of context here. It comes from an introductory paragraph which gives the reasons why the thread was started. It is nothing to do with the report's content. The body of the report consists only if the listing of filters and their known pros and cons. Any statement of personal feelings, wishes, fantasies, desires, favorite colors, favorite restaurants, etc are irrelevant. I could tell stories about my fantasy life as an Erk in the Lower World of Mishagos here and it wouldn't mean anything.

This is not meant to be "more conclusive" than anything other people have said. You're taking me wrong with that. The purpose here is to have a thread that can show, in a constructive manner, all of the pros and cons of each unit rather than just have people tell each other what they should buy. I think there's a big difference. I even said this is not meant to be definitive.

Statements about things such as claimed flow rates, expense to buy/operate, are hard facts. There is no need for independent testing to come up with such results. All you need to do is shop.

Penguin 100 is claimed to filter 100 GPH and is $17.99 at drsfostersmith.com. Just the same as an Aquaclear filters the equivalent GPH and is $14.99. The Whisper 10 is $12.99 and is rated at 90 GPH. These are hard facts, not opinions. Then when one considers the cost of replacement media, it can be determined which filter will generally cost the most to operate and which will cost the least. Again, not opinion. Just math.

Durability can be backed up by repair histories and consumer reports. Just the same as it's generally known that a Honda is a fairly reliable car, one can surmise from the stories and opinions people post on these forums that Whisper filters have a higher failure rate than Aquaclears. It's not opinion. It's just observation. Unfortunately there have never been any proper consumer data on the long term repair histories of HOB filters. But that still doesn't mean that what I wrote here is my "opinion." It's a gathered generalization of the bulk of posts on this forum and others. I'm reporting on the trends I see and the majority of experiences people have claimed to have had with these products.

If someone reports that their biowheel stopped spinning, that is not an opinion. It is a fact. Biowheels can have a tendency to stop. A Ford Pinto can explode if rear ended. Simple facts.

And finally, regarding things like "difficult to repair," "ease of setup," etc - yes these are opinions. But they are not my opinions. They are, like the reports of dependability, etc, my basic summary of the majority of things people have said. Not once did I mention my own personal opinion about any of these products. Otherwise it would be easy to determine which, if any, I favor.

Finally, as I said before, I am not griping with the fact that people are giving opinions on these forums- I am griping with the suggestions of one product over another. I can't count how many times a thread has ended up being nothing more than people saying which is their favorite we get nowhere. I started this thread because I really want to build a good knowledge base of the strengths and weaknesses of each filter so that people who are inquiring about which to get can make informed decisions rather than just go, "Oh such and such on the fishy forum said to buy a Penguin so that's what I'm getting." Instead they would weigh their options because they fully understand them all.

Okay, that being said, I hope people post here. And I kind of hope there will be equivalent threads for canister filters, heaters, etc as well. So rather than just debate and lay claim to our personal favorites, we can all share in a collective knowledge base of known issues regarding the products we spend our hard earned money on.

Make sense?

i like the aquaclear - the filter media options are much better than the rest . ive had them on tanks for years with no problems. they are a little noisy though

I support your desire for the true capabilities of filters. But unless the testing is from an outside source it will just be defined by personal opinion and advertising.

I can see posts that say 9/10 have a hard time changing the media, but for the 1/10, it may be the easiest.

The pros and cons will still be opinions. Your definition of soft plastic durable, and a dozen othe adjectives may be totally different than others.

Majority of respondents, not a majority of users.

It can go on and on.

But that's all I wanted...just people to post their general opinions and experiences about each filter without telling people "you should buy this one."

Am I not making that clear after writing way too many paragraphs? haha

Yes, you are clear, just as others were, in other threads, that you profusely complained about. The only difference, in essence, is that you started this thread.

You give the impression that we shouldn't state what we prefer, one over another, because it is just our opinion. The same thing you have done here.

I just find it amusing. :)

I have used all three of these filters for years. I do not agree with a fair amount of your post. I will just pick a few nits to provide some examples.

1- Bio wheels do not just stop- when they do its from a lack of proper maintainance not anything inherent to the filter. This is not a design flaw, it is operator error.

2. Anybody who has difficulty loading AquaClear media probably has a hard time walking too.

3. The Flow adjustment on the Emperor is a 3 position deal- Flow only to sraybars for feeding, Low Flow and High Flow. BTW the spraybar water totally by passes the carts.

4. The AC impellor setup is not more suseptible to foreign matter problems than the other two.

5. The basic Whisper has no bio-media at all.

6. Filter flow rates are based on an empty filter- ie no media in it. Add media and the comparisons are useless.

7. I have 23 AquaClears running- some for over 6 years. Not a one has ever cracked the case. And they are all quiet.

8. In a power outage Emperor drains and wont restart when power comes back on.

I could go on but what is the point? You have made up your mind.
