What do other members use instead of using the Marineland rite size filter cartridge? I also don't want to use something that contains carbon. thanks

All you have to do is pull the blue floss of the black frame and then toss the carbon. Then cut some filter floss to the right size and use an elastic to hold it in place.
I have an Aquaclear sponge, cut in half so it's half the thickness, held in place with the black frame from one of the original inserts. Works like a charm

I use the Aquaclear foams, too. The work quite well for mechanical filtration and last almost forever.

Although on my new 20 gal High I bought a Aquaclear 30 to try. I do like my mini bio-wheel on my 10 gal.

I use sponges, A/C or big Als bulk sponges. the big Al's are ever so slightly finer than the A/c's so they do an ever so slightly better job. If you want finely polished water, use the filter floss as mentioned. I use marineland bonded filter pad when I go that route.
