pet smart fish

Petsmart

Don't rely on any salesperson to have more knowledge than yourself if you do your research about which fish you are interested in keeping.
As far as the quality, I've never had any problems with their fish dying or being diseased. My local specialist store, Amazonia, which I like, gave me Ich and disease 50% of the time. -for what its worth.
The 2 Midas in my icon pic were bought at Petsmart when they were 1.5 inch babies. They are over a foot now.

Petsmart is good stay away from petco. I have only had ich from petsmart but I also use salt in my tanks so really no problems. I only have large pet stores here in colorado i dont think people like fish too much not a lot of fish stores. The employees dont know a whole lot but I give them credit.

Freshwater fish should be kept in freshwater with no added salt. All they salt they "need" comes out of the tap. Adding salt to your tank can shorten their lifespans considerably.

You may want to read this article on why you shouldn't keep salt in your tanks:

Quarantine all new fish and treat for ich and any other diseases in the QT tank and there is no danger at all to the other fish.

my post may have sounded wrong I only use salt when necessary to treat ich and such, thanks for the article I will pass it on very informational.
Ah, then I apologize. Your post certainly sounded like you put salt in all the time ;)

Hi.. just lurking and reading, but I wanted to chime in and say that I've actually had the opposite Petco/Petsmart experience than most of you seem to. There was a Petco in Oregon and another in Tennessee that had fairly knowledgable employees, and gorgeous tanks with healthy fish. On the other hand, every Petsmart I've been in has been... just plain depressing. I've seen more floaters in Petsmarts than anywhere else, except maybe Walmart. When I was first starting out with fish, they routinely gave me awful advice. Just blech.

Of course, I've been in LFS's that have been as bad or worse, so....

Here in NorCal the problem with Petsmart is that all employees seem to be 16 years old with zero experience (though trying to be helpful), and PetCo employees are on the older side (around 20-25) with zero interest in you. They roll their eyes if you want to buy a fish.

As far as tanks are concerned, the Petsmart tanks can vary ALOT from store to store.

the petsmart in my area takes pretty good care of their fish. i bought all of my fish from them, and haven't had any deaths so far.
