PETA's Stance on Aquariums

There was one section that said "power filters interfere with fish communications and/or at least make your fish bonkers" ...with all the ultra or sub-sonic noise. But later in the article they specify that a power filter is absolutely necessary.

So I'm killing my fish and keeping them alive at the same time ?

I guess I should grab a new 42 gallon tank, on my way home, for my 14 neon tetras. ...or maybe I'll put them in with Cell the oscar, since he apparantly only needs 33 of his 55 gallons.

If you have a single fish, check with friends and neighbors to find another loner

Ad found on Yahoo Personals: Single Oscar, 4 years old, Pisces, non-smoker, (sex not determined) seeking companion. Prefer: slow moving fish of any species, no larger than 2 inches with no sharp/pointy projections. If you cause heartburn, plz do not reply.

And interesting how the fish show no signs of this, hmmm. I went to a lecture on fish behaviour earlier this year, and it never came up, hmmm. Like I said, they must be just giving away Ichthyology degrees. Seriously though, science, like other fields has it's share of idiots who sneak through. They usually show up in places like this... Too bad if the dude is actually a good scientist who got drunk one night and just made some completely philosophical ramblings and got quoted out of context.

or maybe his quote was about PETA driving us bonkers....

Happy...did the lecture you went to mention what tools fish were using?? Or making? Someone else besides PETA surely must know about this..

Ive heard this before. And I dont entirely doubt its validity. Im sure fish can hear the constant thumming of the powerheads/pumps. As to wether it drives them nuts or not, I have no idea. But their natural enviroments in many cases are not quiet either. The ocean is incredibly loud, just us humans can not hear the sounds.

Nursie--I'll check with the guys at the trout hatcheries for any sign of tool using trout in the raceways. Half the facilities are under construction right now, so the fish wouldn't even have to build their own. Of course, I'd suspect power tools are not very fish friendly...Maybe cordless?

While checking out the link that Puffer provided, I came across some of their material concerning the fur trade. My question is this... how can they possibly suggest that wearing synthetic clothing such as pleather and vinyl is a means of protecting animals? Seems a little ironic to me, considering neither is biodegradeble. Just wondering if they realize that harming our environment also harms animals--the very thing they are against. Why not suggest wearing 100% cotton or something?? IMO a herd of cattle trying to survive in a field littered with PETA's suggested clothing options IS animal abuse.

OMG!! LMAO!! Funniest thing ever!! Especially the end.

Like fish just magically appear at your neighbors house with no place to live. Or like Pirahna's need some goldfish friends to hang out with.

Peta is a bunch of people who feel bad about themselves so they think they'll save the animals by joining. Needless to say if there were Peta people 1000 years ago they would have starved, been overrun with animals and frozen to death.

I don't agree with alot of what they do, but fur is one thing I'm not a fan of. It is not a by-product in most cases of another industry, like leather (although I've heard that "food" cows are not the same ones that we get leather goods from, not sure if thats correct or not) . Anyhow, fur farms are horribly cruel, much like puppy mills.

This poor soul is the actual "test pig" used to construct Pams new lips...

Once again, I have it on good authority...
