Petco Malaysian Driftwood Warning!

Just a quick warning to anyone looking to buy or those who have bought Malaysian or other connected driftwoods from Petco: Any items that are multy-piece (slate-wood, or wood-wood) beware that they use some metal screws on their formations. This may not be 100% of the wood but it would be advisable to check before putting it in your tank. Just thought i'd warn those of you to whom this applies.

also on a side note; reptile and/or fishkeepers planning to buy the wooden half-logs; do so soon, as word is Petco will be replacing the entire line with artificial versions. :sad:

Were they using regular screws or stainless steel screws? If stainless steel, wouldn't that be ok in a aquarium?

imho, not worth the risk, even if stainless, i saw no attempt to seal; from what i could see, they looked rusty.

Stainless stell or brass screws would be quite safe...I cannot imagine them using anything else.

Depending on the grade of stainless they may or may not be safe for aquarium use. Lower grades of stainless will rust when submerged in water.

I do not believe that stainless screws are made of anything but the better grades, are they not?

Yes they can be made of lower grade stainless. It just depends on the manufacturer.

i got 2 pieces of maylasis driftwood in my tank no problem

I have 4 pieces, two since Nov., and have seen no evidence of rust.
