IMHO, all these "My LFS sucks" threads are getting old.

My LFS is probably the best in Michigan. Expert advice and everything. I just bought from a place where I usually don't and I payed.

They take a rag and just wipe down every thing in the tank, including underneath the gravel. This causes all the waste to be suspended in tanks water and they wait for the filter to remove it.
They do not use a rag; they use an algae sponge. I can vouch for this as I have worked for the company in more than one store, and have the policies and procedures ingrained in my head (and they're generally very strict about them). Yes, each store is required to gravel stir a set number of tanks. What is wrong with that? Each tank receives a constant flow of fresh water, and likewise, a consistent output of water.

In any general situation, you should definatly know what you are going to the store for before you go...I have been given bad advice from EVERY pet/fish store I've been to. You have to do your research first, which (no offence to AC) should consist of a wide range of sources.
I watched a girl at Petsmart sell a women $150 worth of live tropical plants that she said would "flourish in a 100g pond and surely survive the winter."
I couldn't help be strike a conversation with the women while in another aisle to tell her they would surely die in her pond in the Upstate NY winters.
Another guy at a LFS told me that the SAEs didn't eat algea at all and where only sold that way as a marketing trick. Then when I asked him what he would recommend, he said the clown plecos, which where $5 more! I have found more success with SAEs than anyother pleco!
I learned not to ask too many questions...and if you have one while your there, leave and do your research elsewhere!

I have seen them use a rag...and anyways is there much difference between a rag and a sponge being used? What is wrong with this gravel stirring practice??? You have a very small, extremely overstocked tank that has an overload of waste. Then it is stirred into the water the fish live and breathe in! Any time particles are suspended in the water like that it can have very adverse effects on the fish. It can lead to irritation of their skin and gills, it can cause them to suffocate, and it can lead to the fish becoming ill or even death. This practice is extremely inhumane.

I'm not sure I would call it inhumane. in the wild the conditons get a lot worse that what can happen in our tanks.. in the rivers heavy rain cause sediment to get in the water it is flushed out with continuous water movement(eventually)

I can see this may be behind the logic in the stores..I have seen the stirring in the tanks.I also noticed heavy water movement in the tank and the sediment moved out fairly quickly

I can't vouch for the continuous fresh water going in the tanks..but atleast a large sump is in use..

It is inhumane because PetSmart does it on purpose! What happens in the wild is out of our control. In the wild there is not usually waste from a 100 fish in 15 gallons of water. It only takes a few seconds for the particles in the water to have adverse effects on the fish. No fish is better off at PetSmart than in the wild!
