PetSmart Backroom

Niiiiiiiice. i <3 Penn & Teller.

Even locally PETA has affected my community. We have an illegal (yes, illegal!) no-kill animal shelter here in town. It is privately owned and funded, with no help from local or county government. PETA sent in undercover people with cameras to check it out and document the poor conditions at the place. Then they took all their video, notes, and other evidence and turned it over to the cops. Did they stay awhile and volunteer at the shelter? Did they donate money to help legalize the shelter? Did they help walk dogs, clean litterboxes, or build better kennels and doghouses? No. They simply walked around without identifying themselves, then ran to the cops. If they had been successful, the owners would have been arrested and all the animals would have been confiscated and immediately killed, which I guess is the idea. I suppose they spend too much money on their costumes for any to be left over for the animals who really need it.

PETA did initially offer to take some of the animals, but the shelter owners turned them down. . . think this might be why?

A 2003 New Yorker profile included PETA top dog Ingrid Newkirk's story of how she became involved in animal rights after a shelter put down stray kittens she brought there. So she went to work for an animal shelter in the 1970s, where, she explained, "I would go to work early, before anyone got there, and I would just kill the animals myself. Because I couldn't stand to let them go through (other workers abusing the animals.) I must have killed a thousand of them, sometimes dozens every day."

You are wrong in the fact that it DOES benefit both animals and people in the fact that animals aren't hurt from being healthier form not eating their own crap and the fact that people won't have to eat animals who have been eating their own crap. Let me ask you this... If someone was growing pot and the police came in and confiscated the pot do you think that would be an invasion of personal property?

How are they violent? Do they use car bombs on a regular schedule? It seems like most people on this thread use labels for thing instead of facts and statistics.
first of all, you cannot compare illegal drugs to leather belts, shoes, or fur coats. its like saying a dolphin and a leopard geko are the same. the police would have a warrant to confiscate the illegal drugs anyway. PETA attacks people with fur coats, for example, spraying them with paint. that is destruction of another's property and vandalism.

how are they violent? they go around spraying people with paint because they have a leather belt or a fur coat on, vandalizing and destroying their property.

recently, they went to my high school and started handing out papers protesting discecting animals, such as the cats we discest junior year. truth be told, most of those cats were feral strays, already dead on the side of the road, or taken from an animal hoarder's home (in which they are feral and must be euthanized). why should all of the bodies be burned when they can be donated to a biological organization that provides animals to schools? rats were another big one in the protest (which we discect at the end of freshman year).

So, Mother Yoda came into this thread with no knowledge of PETA at all, and after 5 mins of looking at their website managed to develop such a strong opinion in favor of them that he can develop an argument for them point by point (sort of)? Sounds fishy to me.

Yep.

Like trolling...

sounds like a typical PETA follower, LOL

I'm not a huge Penn and Teller fan but that episode summed up problems with PETA pretty well. The protest outside of the animal shelter is a good example of what's wrong with that organization. If they really wanted to help animals in shelters they would have brought food and money. If they wanted to find a way to make it a no-kill organization they could give up more than a Sunday afternoon of hackey sack and joing the board of directors. Or better yet made a massive donation to a spay and neuter program. They have the funds to do that. That protest was a disgusting display. People who work in shelters don't euthanize animals because they enjoy it, they euthanize animals because they don't have a choice. There are simply too many unwanted animals and not enough homes. Maybe instead of standing outside in skull masks with bullhorns they could go in and adopt something. My local humane society has over a 50% euthanasia rate. That's nobody's fault but negligent pet owners. They're so desperate for funds that when you bring them a bag of food or a toy they act like you have brought them a mountain of gold. Those people don't want to put animals to sleep. I got my most recent cat from my humane society on her last day there (accidentally) and the woman working said she was so happy to see her adopted, because she liked her so well that she named her after one of her childhood friends. It would have been her job to take her out of the cage where she had lived for three months and hand her over to be euthanised. I don't think a single one of those (insert swear word)s at that protest would have had the spine to do that, and then go back to work the next day. I guarantee you not a single one of them cares about animal welfare that much.

I hate PETA, their videos do nothing but ruin the watchers days. Their requests are always so ridiculous that it is impossible, and it's just an excuse to show a really terrible horror story and laugh at the viewers' breaking hearts. What do they do other than making sad and usually misleading videos? Some PETA extremists go as far as killing people for "animal rights". I remember some PETA extremists killing vetenarians because they refused to stop cat declawing.
I'm sure there is some truth in the videos, but I do think they are very misleading. Yes, Petsmart (and other LPS) usually have LOTS of dying pets, and they think its an nuisance. And yes, as someone else said it before, they buy really cheap animals because 1) They make a profit 2) There are many ppl who buy them because they feel the need to save the animals' life. And again, it's not entirely Petsmarts' fault (or any LPS for the matter). Alot of animals are poorly breed, eg. puppy mills. I dont understand though, that if LPS are not able to sell animals as quickly as they order, then why do they order so dam many and allow overcrowding? A prime example are those fish tanks. Sadly, it is all about the $$ because usually, they allow the animals to die because it costs more to medicate/heal them than to buy a new animal!!
I noticed the betta box in the video. I feel really bad to say, but that actually looks "good" the way they were shipped, from what I've seen previously! At BIG AL'S, my friend was betta-shopping, and she asked if there was any more bettas. The guy went to the backroom and brought out a box. He opened the box and... I nearly cried when I saw what was in it. Tiny bags (about 1/2 the size of that in the video) of MANY more bettas were there, with water JUST ENOUGH to cover their body (that means, less water than in the vid), and the bags weren't even full of air!! They were stapled on the top to "seal" and the bag was squishy, so that more bettas can be shipped in the box... This is contrary to the Peta video where they have twice the water of their bodies and the bag is packed tight and round full of air. I'm not saying the Petsmart in peta has good conditions, but saying there is worse than that. At least the betta is more likely to be shipped alive. Either way, heart wrenching thing to see for a betta lover like me :(

lol. . . . unless you buy directly from a breeder over in taiwan or something, EVERY betta is shipped that way. prices are low because they can pack more fish into a box with less water weighing it down. it's not like other fish where they can put a bunch into one large bag, ya know? if they were shipped in individual large bags there would be a lot less "betta lovers" like you because their price would probably become prohibitive.

as far as overstocking - most of the time when i visit a petsmart at least half of their cages are empty, awaiting shipments of new animals and reptiles. they don't plan on keeping the pets there for very long, so overcrowding isn't an issue when it's only for a week, or less. in regards to the fish - same thing. feeders go very quickly, so taking a video of the tanks on the day they get all the new fish isn't really accurate as far as showing the average amount that are usually in there. plus they have all kinds of filtration and additional water volume hidden behind the display, so even though the fish are visually in very close quarters, there is a lot more water for them to be in than just the small box that you see. it's like putting 20 mollies into a 10g tank, but having a 50g sump hidden underneath the tank.

i agree with ash.

instead of handing out ther biased fliers they could go volunteer at an animal shelter, zoo, public aquarium, or other animal oriented public place.

i recall a person on an Episode of Wife Swap saying that to her "swap family" to a vegan and his daughter.
