Denver has recently passed a law banning pit bulls in the city. animal control is going to people's homes and forcibly taking the animals and euthanizing them. if they even RESEMBLE a pit they can be taken and killed. if the owner refuses to give up the dog, he can go to jail and the dog will still be put down.
what has this country come to?
nearly 300 dogs have been killed already in denver. these dogs havent hurt anyone. actually, the statistics show that pits are responsible for a very small margin of bites and attacks on humans...guess what? Cocker spaniels and labrador retrievers have the most bites on record.
pit bull hysteria is what the news columnists in denver are calling this stupid law.
what can we do to stop this spread of hysteria before it comes to my town? where i live, people are afraid of pits as well. even though they admit they've been chased or bitten by a lab or rottweiler...it's ridiculous.
 
Write to your legislature (sp?) and educate them about the breed, and about proper ownership. I agree this is completely rediculous. A dog is a dog... with no training what-so-ever, a labrador, poodle, pit bull, dobe, or pomeranian will be out of control. Also, they need to see safe family pits that do no harm.... even better would be therapy "vicious" breeds that go into childrens hospitals and elderly homes and help those people. Encourage those who have pits to train them and maybe even get them to pass the AKC's canine good citizens test. The best thing you can do is to get the officials on your side before the battle even begins.

I cant say anything. I am speechless about what is going on in the states right now. Over the past week I believe I have heard that over 200 cities in the US have outright banned Pit Bulls and only 20 of those cities are offering relocation adoption services for the dogs, the rest are simply euthanizing the dogs. You know what this is called?

GENOCIDE!

Deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group.
 
Oh but wait Pit Bulls are just an animal, so we can kill them, its okay.

They are just as important to me and my family then the rest of my family is. They are people for lack of a better term, My female that is my "Pet" is like a daughter to me.

i'm just at a loss. i dont know what i would do if animal control knocked on my door and ordered me to give up my dog for no reason other than she was born a pit.
it is genocide.
i read a few other articles on the issue and apparently some rescue groups have started an underground railroad of sorts to get the pits out of denver before animal control can get to them. that is a relief, but it wont save every dog....whats next after the pit? any large breed with teeth?
 
I don't personally have a pit, but I've seen/heard more about good ones than bad ones. And, if they get a ban on pits, they can modify the ban on any breed. I have a malamute, their considered one of the breeds "most likely to bite" by the cdc, I could easily be affected.

On top of that, this is identical to gun control. Only the responsible owners are affected... to me, that's simply not fair and not american.

thats wrong in my book to its all in how the dog is trained!!! My friend has a shar pei mix with a staffy and i think that my husky would bite someone before his dog would. i think that everyone who thinks that it is the dog to be affraid of should watch the links in labont865's sig before they post. id say be affraid of the owners who train them to do this. if iwas starved for months on end you better belive that your arm is in danger around me too.
