Pit Bull bans...WTF?

... ...... ..... I cannot find any data on specific breed bite forces (anyone want to direct me :) )... except for one show I watched on Discovery or NG were a rottie had a stronger bite force than the pit.

"Dr. I. Lerh Brisbin of the University of Georgia states, To the best of our knowledge, there are no published scientific studies that would allow any meaningful comparison to be made of the biting power of various breeds of dogs. There are, moreover, compelling technical reasons why such data describing biting power in terms of ‘pounds per square inch’ can never be collected in a meaningful way. All figures describing biting power in such terms can be traced to either unfounded rumor or, in some cases, to newspaper articles with no foundation in factual data. (From the ADBA booklet, “Discover the American Pit Bull Terrier.)"

I’m not sure what the answer is. I watched a story on the news one night about some pits that mauled a child and it was the second time the same dogs had attacked a child. The city had no legislation to compel an owner to give up a dog even after it had attacked a person. That was one extreme. Banning out right seems to be the other. I’m not even sure it would work. What are you banning, what would constitute a Pit, could it be circumvented by mixing breeds, would your local thug comply with such a law? I expect the wrong dogs would suffer.

The whole debate reminds me of a court case in a Vachss novel about a lawyer looking for a stay of execution on a dog. I’ve inserted the link below. Vachss writes a very dark series of novels about a character named Burke who is not a very nice guy but takes out his unpleasantness mostly on child abusers. Definitely not for everyone but he loves his vicious dogs.

I think in most cases the problem lies with the owners not the dogs:

"That's a lot of crap," I told the fat man. "Dobermans don't turn on you. They got a bad rep for it, but they don't deserve it. See, what happens, a guy hears all the stories, okay? He gets a Dobie as a puppy, he figures he's going to make sure the dog never turns on him when he grows up. So he beats the hell out of the dog every day. Takes control. Dominates. It's easy to make a puppy afraid of you. Makes some people feel tough, you understand? But Dobermans, one way they're different from other dogs, they got good memories. Real good. So, one day, the guy goes to beat up his dog and the dog says, 'Un huh, not today, pal.' And the dog nails him. Like he deserves. Then this guy, this guy who beat his own puppy, he says, 'The son of a ***** turned on me.' You understand what I'm telling you?" This story appears in Born Bad by Andrew Vachss

When I was growing up it was Huskies and German Sheppard’s we feared. I think this link shows it about the character of the dog:

As for the fictional court case - Every dog must have his day:

Okay, you know what? I have tried to be nice and listen to people opinions, but enough is enough already. Anybody here who think Pit Bulls as a breed are dangerous is a complete F-ING RETARD. Ability has nothing to do with how dangerous an animal is. Look at a whale, a whale could kill you a hell of alot easier than a 6 foot bull(whaler) shark, but it isnt actually as dangerous as the shark. The shark will consider you prey and try to eat you, the whale wont. But if you torment the whale it will turn and possibly attack you or your boat. The same goes for the dogs. Pit Bulls are not born dangerous and do not just turn for no reason. They have to be taught the behaviour. This is fact! I have bred well over 200 Pits and only two have ever bitten somebody, and both were in protection of their owners. My friend breeds labs and has bred about 70-100 and has had almost 17 dogs bite people. Seems to me thats a much higher % then the pits. 1% VS. 17%+ tell me which breed is more dangerous?
The answer is NEITHER! As long as a dog is trained properly and the owner is responsible, NO dog is dangerous. As for kids getting attacked, what are the most common circumstances for pit attacks on people/kids? The person enters the yard of the dog. The person acts nervous or suspicious aroung the dog, the person tries to take a toy or bone from the dog, the dog has been abused or neglected, Somebody tries to remove the dog from its home. These constitute 99% of all Pit Attacks on people, none of these instances are the dogs fault. The bottom line is most dog attacks happen because people let them happen, whether its not educating you kids about dogs, not paying attention and allowing you kids go to up to a strange dog or whatever, 90% of dog attack happen in the dogs fear of the person or in the dog trying to protect itself or its owner. There are attacks that happen outside of these situations granted but lets remember thaton average there are about 14 pit bulls attacks or bites on people per year, but there are over 100 lab attacks/bites and nearly 300 JRT attacks/bites. What dog is really more dangerous.

Anybody who thinks Pits are any more dangerous than any other breed of dog is a complete idiot. As with anybody who thinks they should be banned. These people are un-educated ignorant selfish close minded RETARDS! and should spend there time trying to rid this world of real problems like hunger, war.

You know something is wrong with people when a Child molester can be out of prison in less than 2 years...2 YEARS! and people are more worried about a banning a dog breed that accounts for less than 2% of all annual dog attacks/bites. You people have some serious problems and need to stop ragging on an innocent animal, that is only doing what it has been taught or told to do.

Sorry

I think "retard" is a little harsh...I understand your frustration...I hear it from many a pit lover...Love them as much as you want...Just leash and muzzle them in public...Nobody has to be nervous or intimidated...And you are protected incase your terrier decides to act like a terrier...Trying to turn a breed around from being bred for the soul purpose of fighting does not happen in a few generations...Took bulldogs umpteen years to become the foot stool they are better known for now...

why not all three? Aliens are going to take over government of the world and make us worship them :soda:

I dont think retard is harsh enough. Labont, congrats, you've earned my respect. Your statement is pretty close to what I think but dont say to most people. Pitbull haters are a product of ignorant views from biased media and hear say. I'm a dog owner and I treat all unknown dogs the same. How can you not? When I was about 13 (Im 24 now) I got my face chewed up by a blue heeler/ australian shepherd mix. 40 stitches in my face. About a month later one of my neighborhood friends got it worse than me. His cheeks were sliced open giving him a smile like the Joker from Batman. None of this ever hit the news. Not even the paper. If that was a pitbull attack you would of heard about it in Idaho.

And while I'm on this lovely subject, I'm gonna make a quick comment on the "thugs" that own pitts, simply because I'm tired of being slandered unintentionally every time this topic comes up. Whenever people bring up the "thugs" and "nazi drug dealers" (that was my favorite), trying to slander the species it shows that some people are completely ignorant to some American cultures or are fully knowledgeable and just consider themselves above them.

Im sure even the older people here have heard of this gigantic movement called hip-hop. Some people call it rap. This movement has taken America by storm so much so that it has completely eclipsed the almighty rock and roll and has only left room for pop (which has been drastically altered by hip-hop) and country. In this movement the pitbull is a symbol of strength and loyalty. The pitbull is the favorite of all of mans best friends. Pitt owners gain respect from their peers for their lovely pet and I never have a new guest that doesn't compliment my fine animal.

Pitbull haters with no negative experiences sound like kindergartners that dont like fat kids.

Just leash and muzzle them in public.

1.) Anti-pitbull people will say "Ha, told you they were all bad. Now let's take it a step further and ban them."
2.) Why should a pitbull owner have to muzzel their dog and a great pyrenese (sp????) owner not? Or Great Dane owner? Muzzels give a false sense of security that only those muzzled are dangerous. Either only muzzel proven dangerous dogs (doesn't mean they have had to inflict damage yet), or muzzel all dogs.

My mind drifted to a muzzled Pomeranian... I almost busted out loud laughing..

Picture that! ........ Now I'll sue for new shoe laces! :D

----------------------------

What about a posse of Chihuahuas running amok in the streets -- all muzzled..

Naa...
