So inspired by a previous thread on AC regarding planted fish bowls (http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=232882&highlight=luminous) I decided to make one of my own. I followed Whallstad's guidelines.

"tank" - approximately 1.5 gallon square glass vase
substrate - 1" of organic potting soil capped with 1" of black fine gravel (really coarse sand)
plants - 2 Vallisneria nana (still to add - taiwan moss on oak driftwood and maybe a couple of nano marimo balls)
light - screw in cfl "daylight" bulb

I will add the moss on wood this weekend. Next week (water parameters permitting) I will add red cherry shrimp.
Any tips? Ideas? Suggestions?

Thats a great idea! I like it! Maybe I will try one, I have a square glass vase of about the same side just sitting, so maybe I will do the same!

Looks nice with the vals. A flame moss rock could be a great addition to the base.

Are you going to use an airstone or any type of filtration?

Thanks guys for your kind comments! :)
In the picture the water was very cloudy, but it's clearing up now.
I am wondering if the Vals nana will revert to their natural short stature in a very low tech setup?
Flame moss sounds nice, but I'm really trying to go with the plants I already have in my other tanks.
No filter planned (the idea is that it will be heavily planted so the plants will act as filters), not sure yet about an airstone - the original Whallstad directions didn't call for one.

i'm liking this idea too.

on the note of not adding an airstone... walstads tanks are typically longer and wider, not taller, giving more surface area where yours is almost void of surface area in comparison. just some food for thought. not sure how i feel about it personally, either.

That's a good point... I didn't think of that for the tall, skinny container. A clamped down airstone would aid water movement & oxygen, but not sure if that would hurt plants by outgassing co2. I'd definitely wait on the fauna until it becomes very well established... I'm not sure I'm going to add shrimp to my 1g.

I was actually just thinking about plants night time respiration before reading this thread. Perhaps at night you should run an airstone? Plants need oxygen too. Or I could be totally wrong.

(looks up at 2 gallon vase on top of kitchen cupboard..........)

dagnabit Gypsy! lol!
