Planted tanks

Started out as an avid gardner and took some horticulture/ethnobotany classes. Started intergrating aquaponics into my urban garden, then became addicted to fish keeping, breeding and rearing. After that, it became an obsession of melding my two passions while also creating a fun and comfortable enviroment for my fish friends/food that could be enjoyed by all passers by.

I was always "Daddy's little girl". My brothers all had their "Rats" (really hampsters) so my dad bought me a fish tank. A 20gal. I wanted some plants so my dad bought some Crypt Affinis (I did not know the names back then). I had a cheapy hood and light, but they grew and multiplied. I was amazed!!! I could grow plants====Hooked!!!
So if my plants really take off in my aquarium, I may end up putting a pond in my backyard because of a new addiction?
So, if I am starting a new aquarium (cycling now), would you recommend plants before fish or after?
It all started when i came across a moss "tree" while looking at a few videos on youtube. Then i started trying to get plants to grow from those Petsmart plant bulbs. Success. Now i just have a need for plants in all my tanks. My brother's tank now has a HUGE sword plant with maybe 50+ leaves growing and he wont let me have it :/

My parents have a pond in their back yard. My dad lanscaped it very well but had no fully aquatic plants only one floater i forget the name and a lot of water loving plants like bamboo and other reeds. After my parents visited my home and saw all my planted tanks my dad got inspired to take the pond in a new direction. He is now looking into changing the pond substrate to a more plant friendly one and really focused on turning the pond into a planted pond.

We live in Chicagoland and visit Shedd Aquarium 2 to 3 times a year. They have great planted exhibits and behind the seen tours that explains how they keep all the fish and mammals healthy. That's our inspiration!
Plants ASAP! They will help the cycle move along MUCH faster and consume the ammonia quickly (fast growing stem plants and floaters) to basically eliminate spikes. It's an awesome way to do it FAST!
