Plasma or LCD?

This is kind of what I've been podering. Mostly this new TV is gonna be a movie watching machine. And I love dark movies. And watching movies in the dark. And dark video games. The daytime use is probably gonna be limited to soaps, food shows, cartoons, and anything else the rest of the family watches. Not a huge need for HD there, and either will be better than the CRT I'm using now.

I vote for Plasma

I have two plasmas, a 50 Samsung in my room. This is a second generation plasma. I bought it 7 years ago when I worked at Samsung. The Image is still awsome.(back then i paid 3k as a Samsung employee.. ouch). I also have a 54 for the living room Panasonic TC-P54G10 for 1500 at Sears.

i think you're right in that there's no clear winner. Used to be Plasma for picture quality (movies) and LCD for daily use/longevity. But my research before i bought all my LCD's was this:
Plasma does offer slightly better pic for movies - vivid colors. I say slightly because the new LCD models with HIGH contrast ratio get there too.
Pixel speed with new 240 Hz machines is negligible difference.
LED still too $$$
But any way you look at it the all beat the ol' CRT you're squinting at today.:(

Check out the LED TV's.

Also you can get some great deals on Plasmas these days.

The LEDs are nice but simply out of my price range. When this new TV is on its last legs I'll look into the new technology of the day but hopefully that will be years in the future.

i like lcd's personally. i have fish tanks to stare at when i want to see something that looks like it's underwater.

which model is really the question. i like the higher end sony's for a tv and either dell or samsung for a pc monitor. i think the rendition on these sets can't be beat. that's my story and i'm sticking to it.

Thanks for the replies everyone. In all the research I have done there is no clear cut winner. As RB stated earlier the one of the best indicators that I have run across so far is the room lighting. Plasma for dark rooms, LCD for bright rooms. Computer monitor is an LCD and I love it.

Plasma uses apx 25% more power is negative
Plasma has a much sturdier stand is a +
Plasma has glass screen wich is stronger and may deflect the occasional flying matchbox car is a +
Burn in has been mitagated to the point of being a non issue in the new TVs is a tie
Plasmas rule the bigger screens as LCD can be as small as 2" unfortunately I'm righ at the twilight zone of sizes where it could go either way.
Plasma technology is the stimulation of gasses by electrical impulses so color changes can be incredibly fast, no color blur for sports and games.
LCD is the cycling of a backlight through colored liquid crystal cells, color blur is possible but many don't seem to notice.
Plasma has the possipilty for a phosphorus lag or tracer effect wich is described as a faint green hugh.
Plasma has a 178 deg. veiwing angle wich is 100% left to right and up/down
Plasma glass screens reflect more light from ambient sources than matte finish LCD screens.
Plasma colors are said to be truer. Blacks on a plasma screen are said to be at least 10 x the black you get from LCD but heavy color stimulation and bright images can shorten the life of the set.
LCD's can have pixles stick. Small green, red or blue "dots" permanently etched into the screen, impossible with plasma.
LCD's are marginally lighter weight and thinner.
...................no clear cut winner yet. Guess the real test will lie in the store with a side by side comparison.

Anyone else purchased either type of TV have a rave review or a problem with thiers?
you have your facts in order. dark room w/ low ambient light=Plama will be ok. normal room lighting LCD W/LED backlighting preferred

I like LCDs over plasma, I've had to throw away a 42" plasma last year because of burn-in. So I went with a Samsung 42" LED 120hz, amazing quality and so compact. If you cant afford to go with an LED version of an LCD, try to get the biggest screen size possible at 120hz, it makes a difference over 60.
