Plasma or LCD?

We've had 50" Samsung plasma for 2 and a half years now. About a month ago we started noticing severe ghosting when the picture changes from dark to light. It's always done it a little but nothing like this, and it's getting worse. We've tried adjusting the levels but the problem stays the same. We did some research and found many other people have this same problem with their "older" plasmas. The next time we buy a TV we've decided to get an LCD instead.

We have LCD TVs at work and I don't care for them much because of the lousy black levels. Since we can't buy tube TVs anymore I guess LCD is the next best thing if you want to get more than a few years out of your purchase.

Basically the best TVs now are Plasmas with LED based LCDs with local dimming close behind (in terms of picture quality). Besides picture quality, yeah plasmas are hot, with a reflective screen, and consume alot of power. So its a matter of personal taste, and weighing of wants and needs.

Stay with well known brand like Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, LG, Toshiba, Sharp... (for the most part). Don't go with bargain bin brands because you will regret it.

Most importantly, DO RESEARCH! lol

Only get a plasma if you are strictly only going to use it for watching movies.

Computer games and even watching a football game with the score block at the top or bottoms will permanently burn into the screen.

LCD is immune to screen burn.

New plasmas will not burn in

"In the "early" days of plasma TV, image retention, or "burn in" was a real concern. Fortunately, modern sets are far less susceptible thanks to a few new safeguards."

"Far less susceptible" is not immune, they will still screen burn.

My brother the gaming freak, has already image burned his brand new Sony plasma that he just got for Christmas.

Sorry to hear that, btw Sony doesn't make plasmas.

5. Will playing video games on a plasma lead to burn-in?
You might have heard somewhere along the line that playing video games on a plasma can lead to burn-in. The idea is that if some sort of fixed icon is always on the screen during a game, that image will end up ghosted onto your screen forever. Again, this just isn't a real risk these days, particularly if you follow the first 100-hours rule and mix a little TV watching in with your gaming.
