Play sand?

Well as I mentioned, have you looked around at local Mom-and-Pop Hardware stores? Or Pool Filter Supply stores? Hot tub stores maybe?

Good luck with the search:)

Home Depot should sell it. If you live in areas where it gets cold, it will be out of season now. Pool supplies are sold in the garden dept.

I just found Quikrete playsand at lowes department store in the masonry section. I bought 6 -50 pound bags for less than $24.00. Thats 300 pounds.
I hope this stuff is safe for my fishies. If I ever do have a problem, I will let you know. They also had Quikrete all purpose sand, that said warning contains crystaline silica, do not inhale, contents known to cause cancer, arthritis, and something else. But the play sand says warning contents known to cause cancer. But I figured if children are able to play in it, I will try it.
I figure just dont breath it!!!!! They also had Quikrete gravel , I am going to look into this and see if it is also safe for tanks, because im sure its alot cheaper than lfs gravel. It was the regular color of browns and greys ( the natural colors).
If Quikretes products are all fish safe as most of you say, they might put those expensive gravel and sand makers out of business.
I will eventually put some live sand in with the play sand and hope to have all live sand, we shall see :) :hang:

YAY QUIKRETE!

What sizes of bags do they have a lowes? I live right across the street from one and i might get some sand.

Thanks

A mason is the guy who lays brick, stone, block (for basements etc.).
And to answer someone elses question: The sand is mixed with the mortar along with some water to make the cement used to lay the bricks/stone. (this is not quickrete mortar/cement) Masons will use all kinds of different grits of sand though to get the right look for the joints (the space in between the bricks/stones)
I'm sorry, I used to be a mason, and sometimes I forget that not very many people know much about it.

That's funny you say that sillyputty because every time or any one of to home depot I go to & ask where can I find some pool filter sand they look like they dont know what the heck im talking about. In what dept.did you find it in? was it with all the rest of the sand because I did'nt see it. And is pool filter sand the same as silica sand?

What was really funny as they had me traipsing back and forth across the whole store 3 times before they found it and sorry, I don't remember where it was. But like I said, I didn't like it. Looked like play sand. What I say at ace hardware last week looked like the picture someone posted above.

So how do you clean sand? How do you get the uneated food and poo out of it? You cant just use the hose and bucket b/c the hose would suck up the sand also right?

You kinda swirl the python over the sand...it gets most of it up. You can dig it down in a little bit, but pull up quick before it pulls sand down. I use sand because I have plants, and the poo, etc is mulched by the snails and goes into the substrate some too.
