Hello all.

My sister decided to get an oscar. She got it on Wednesday and it will not eat. It is about an inch long and is in a 30 gallon tank for the time being. (she is uprading to a 55 within 6-8 months) She has been offering him hakari and wardly brand chichlid pellets. His tank is 79 degrees F. His body is clear of any fungal or bacterial infection. At first he was very active and she says that now he is really mellow. I think she got him at WalMart.

Please let me know what she can do to help him. This is her first oscar.

just don't feed it for a few days and then try again. Its just getting used to its new home. Also you will need a larger tank, bigger than the 55, like a 75 or even a 90. You won't need a tank this big for a while but if you plan to keep the oscar for its entire life (10+ years) you will need the larger tank.

I have never heard of an oscar starving to death and I agree that's it's probably just getting adjusted to its new home. You could also try Omega One first flake which is an appetite enhancement formula. It wouldn't hurt to continue feeding this formula until the can was used up.

Thats what I thought but he hasnt eaten in a long time. Ill tell her just to hold of on feeding him for a while and then trying again. Ill also recomend the Omega food.

Thanks a bunch. Any other suggestions?

Is the tank cycled? If there is a him ammonia or nitrite level, it may be stressing the oscar and reducing its appetite. and I'd also reccomend a 75 for an oscar. the 55 is only about a foot front to back. The oscar will have trouble just turning around in about a year.

good luck! :)
