Please help regarding Java Fern

Hi Friends !

Today I got a few Java Ferns and I've tied them in a row on a rock with Nylon Fish line thread and a few rubber bands etc...

The plant looks healthy enough to me and it also has a few baby plants at its tips. The only problem I see is the Leaves have a few prominent Brown Spots and patches.

Is this a disease or is it due to stress ? The plant was ordered from a different city and it was in transit for a few hours... Will my Java fern survive and do well ? Kindly advice and help me friends...

Also wanted to ask if Java fern will help and use up the excess nutrition from my tank (as my tank has a heavy bio load)

I can't answer your question completely. My Java Fern has minor brown spots that do not worry me. It also has large black areas on the older leaves. This worried me at first, but the plant has been alive for months and growing. Produces many baby plants.

It is a hardy plant. It should be fine.

Also kindly advice if Java Fern is good at absorbing nutrients from the water (though I've heard that its a slow grower)...

I also bought a plant called aponogeton ulvaceous, is this a good plant and will it survive under normal lightings?

can you post a picture of your fern?
When i just got my fern (from petco) it was in healthy condition and had a few tiny brown/black spots on it but that was not a problem..
But about a few weeks ago my fern underwent something weird. the leafs started to get these big brown spots and after a while it was a holes in the leaf with a remaining brown halo. I snipped off the bad leafs and now slowly am getting new growth..

Also wanted to request regarding the aponogeton ulvaceous,

Actually I got the plant growing from a very small bulb with many roots. I couldnt take of the whole wool and there was still some stuck to the roots very tightly. I have planted it in the following way-

I burried the whole bulb along with the roots (along with the un-removable wool) in to the gravel up to the point where the leaves arise. Is this ok or have i done it wrongly ?

Is yours similar or are the brown spots wayyy smaller? if they are way smaller then no need to worry..

Aponogeton: thats how i planted my aponogeton (but without wool) and the small pieces of wool that were left on the roots will not harm the tank. One of the plants I have has reached 12" the other about 24".

Actually my Fern has the brown things more like patches than spots and certain leafs are almost blackish stains...

I found that 2 of the leaves even have a few holes in them... The plant looks like it has some disease or it was under poor care etc...

Is there any way to cure the plant ? Will the condition improve ?

I have just planted it about 3 hours ago, should I leave it to settle for about a day and then trim the bad leafs ? Kindly advice.

Also regarding the other plant - I find mine to be very-very delicate - I mean its way too soft and fragile ( I mean the texture of the leaves) - is this the way the plant is or even this plant of mine is in bad shape ?

Also can these 2 plants survive with blood parrots and blue dolphin chichlids ? So far no harm done and I'm still hoping that they'll leave them alone...

From here i am not 100% sure on what exactly is wrong with the java fern you received but I am sure that after you post a picture someone on here will give you some good advice.
The bad leafs you can try and snip off and this will promote new growth. When you received the ferns were they cold? I from experience had a few plants die on me due to them being out in the cold weather for 2 long and suffering whats known "crypt disease" (i think thats the name)

The aponogeton is delicate especially if it came from one of those petco/petsmart bulb packs. Though I just let mine be and its been growing fine, some new leafs that are coming out are redish/brownish in color.

These plants would do fine in some cichlid tanks but im not 100% sure on aponogeton.
 
I have a java fern that sometimes gets a few spots like those, but not nearly as many. I wouldn't trim off the leaves, maybe just the worst one, if you must, but from the photo it looks like you'd be cutting it down to a stump. give it a few weeks to settle in, watch for root growth and new plants. I'd seperate new plants off and tie them somewhere else, maybe higher in the tank closer to light, to encourage more growth.
