please help! what is coming out of my danio's butt?? PICS

This may be a dumb question, but what do you mean by "euthanize" a fish?
Sometimes the kindest option is to help the dieing fish pass on to the fishy afterworld. Not always easy, but often the kindest way when it seems a fish is suffering...

thanks for all the help everyone.
unfortunately last night we made the decision to euthanize our poor little guy.

if anyone else has to do something like this i would highly recommend using the clove oil and vodka method. it was seemingly peaceful and painless for the fish and made it a lot easier for us to put him down.

thanks again,
cat

Guess I should be a little more speficic, I know that it means to... end it's life... but when you euthanize an animal, it is with injections. What is your means of euthanizing a fish?

Really sorry to hear that Cat :(

the specific way i euthanized my fish was from this website:

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-the-most-humane-way-to-euthanize-a-fish.htm

i pretty much followed the directions exactly, measurements were probably off, but it worked and felt right in the end.

we will use this method in the future should we ever have to do this again---hopefully we won't!!

to end your fishes lives in a humane way, I read somewhere before that you can put it in a small cup, put it in a freezer and let them freeze to death ...

In my opinion though, I don't really think there is a humane way of ending life to a living thing

The clove oil/vodka method is the most humane method of euthanizing, as Cat said it really causes no additional suffering to the fish. If clove oil isn't available, you can put the fish in a bowl of freezing cold water (like as cold as possible without being frozen) and it will die pretty much instantly. If you put it in a bag/bowl of water and stick it in the freezer, the death is much slower. I personally believe it is more humane to euthanize in such a painless manner when death is inevitable and the fish is already suffering badly.

Although I have heard the clove oil method is best, I have, in an emergency, done the ice water method. From what I have been told, put a bowl of water in freezer until it is iced over. Poke a hole in the top ice and put the fish in the water inside. It is very quick.
