Hello all, I have a couple of questions about my Leather I've had for one week. I brought it home and noticed it had a smaller coral attached to it, and proceeded to separate the two. When doing so, I damaged the foot a bit. For the first five days, the coral showed no sign of distress and was consistantly at full bloom. For the last day and a half it has receeded into itself. I also noticed some tissue flaking off of it from time to time with the water flow.

Should I be taking some action?
Is my research of light and flow correct? (Med light, Med flow)

Tank: 55 gallons
Water Params: 0 nitrate, 0 ammonia, 0 phos, 0 trites, PH 8.2, Cal 400, SG 1.023, Temp 79-80

I have attached some photos to give a better idea of the damage I've caused. :headshake2:

Thanks in advance for any info and suggestions you all may have!

It should be ok. Your SG is a little lower than usual for a reef (~1.025), but not a biggie.

What was the other coral?

Fairly normal for these corals. They will suddenly recede and start shedding a waxy epithelial layer, which is a normal way of cleansing its surfaces. It isn't too uncommon for this to last a few days. It may not hurt, either, to put it into more flow (but obviously indirect--i.e. don't sit it in front of a powerhead.

Thanks so much guys! I knew I could count on you.
I was thinking my sg was a little low as well, so thanks for the conformation.
The coral that was attached was a smaller version of the same thing. About an inch tall. This was a neat little bonus which was oddly missed at the store.
Thanks again for putting my mind at rest. These things drive me nuts until thier resolved.
