I would say it's a neolamprologus tretocephalus...or 5 bar cichlid (common name). It's from Lake Tanganyika, will hit 6 inches, maybe a little more and is an aggressive fish to similar looking fish and all fish when breeding...fins look a little raggy - is he getting beat up/what are your parameters for ammonia/nitrite/nitrate ?

here's a yahoo image search for trets http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?_adv_prop=image&fr=yfp-t-472&va=five+bar+cichlid&sz=all

You should see very noticeable green & yellow colouration of the eye and flecks of sparkly blue around the gills if I'm right.

After looking at it, not browsing it quickly I concur with you Coler. I need to look at posts more clearly sometimes....i'm a dork!

The fins were like that when I got him/her. I got up really close the it and the was like a metallics blue on the gill covers. The ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate about 20. Right now it is in a 10g tank. Because that is all I have. What size tank I can put it in. I planed on get a 30g soon is that to small. Will the fins grow back. Thanks

Sounds like "coler" is on the right track. I remember a description comparing these to the demasoni's.
I can guarantee it is NOT a demasoni. Their dark bars do not fade out towards the belly and continue to the end of the tail.

The only problem with the ID here is it looks to have SIX bars .. I would see how that sixth bar develops.. And if it doesn't then the above is likely correct.. But you'll notice that Neolamprologus Sexfasciatus is a more likely candidate.. As the fact that in a 5 bar the fifth bar is where the sixth bar on the Authors picture is :)

Correct me if I am wrong .. But it looks more like Sexfas than Treto to me.

well it will be just about OK in a 30G on its own as regards size, but is not likely to take kindly to tankmates when it matures and its not an ideal single specimen fish

Fins should grow back if good water parameters are maintained. Melafix will also help with that.

As regards whether its a tret/sexfasciatus, On closer inspection I can't really tell if the 'bar' closest the tail is a bar/associated to the fin damage or a shadow. If that's colouration by way of a bar it has 6 and is therefore sexfasciatus.

Why are you all guessing? akapaul26 was right. It is def. a female Kenyi (Lombardoi). If you know anything about Mbunas or african cichlids this is one of the easiest IDs.

looks like a sexfasciatus or tretocephalus to me is all because it doesn't look as much like this http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images/view?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3F_adv_prop%3Dimage%26fr%3Dyfp-t-501%26va%3Dfemale%2Bkenyi%2Blombardoi%26sz%3Dall&w=255&h=138&imgurl=www.goliadfarms.com%2Fimages%2Ffish%2Fcichlids%2Fmetriaclima%2Flombardoi_female.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.goliadfarms.com%2Fpages%2Ffish%2Fcichlid%2Fmetriaclima%2Flombardoi.htm&size=17.0kB&name=lombardoi_female.jpg&p=female+kenyi+lombardoi&type=jpeg&no=2&tt=8&oid=de22a876cde24a34&ei=ISO-8859-1

as it does like this http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?_adv_prop=image&fr=yfp-t-472&va=five+bar+cichlid&sz=all

I don't have a female kenyi but I do have a tretocephalus and hey...I could be wrong :)...for instance, it looks really like this juvenile female kenyi picture except for the eyes http://images.search.yahoo.com/sear...lickr.com/photos/calwhiz/&ei=ISO-8859-1&src=p

would be easier to tell without the fin damage
