70x15.25 1 piece 64.19 6 pieces 56.41 each
94x15.25 1 piece 86.13 6 pieces 75.69 each
I thought about doing 2 pieces for the 8' tanks, but decided against it. 1 piece looks nicer, but here's the price for those.
47x15.25 1 piece 43.97 12 pieces 38.64 each (77.28 per 8' tank)
aw i was hoping that this was an old thread that i just missed so that i could see how it all turned out right now! lol
can't wait to see it all completed!
Wow those are good prices....when I did my ply tank I paid about $65 for one piece, about 60x18, 1/4" thick. Are you using 1/4" as well, since you're looking at 18" height?
18" height allows me to have 3 tanks on the rack with ample room above each to access the interior. Decorations will have to be put in the lower tank first then move up, but that's no big deal.
Anyone ever use http://www.amesresearch.com/app_eb.htm for sealing tanks. It's potable and non toxic even before curing. Someone who built a 500 gallon tank said he used it, but I can't find anything else on it yet.
My friend Jack reminded me that his 2600 gallon tanks use pond liners. He has perfected a method for bonding the glass fronts (3 @ 7'x3') to the pond liner using I think Dow 927 and a hard rubber material to make a gasket.
The bad news is that the way that the wall AC unit and door from the laundry room into the fish are prevents me from going with the 96" racks. I'm still going to get the 24" width racks to replace the 18" ones I have now. The 72" ones will work perfectly giving me 6 135 gallon tanks between the 2 racks.
The 6 x 10 liners are $22.80 from azponds.com.
The professional seaming kits are $70. I'll probably only need 1 or 2 to do all 6 tanks.
45 Mil EPDM Firestone Pond Liner
(Box Liners)
.38 cents / sq ft.
I estimate that I'll need 11 sheets of 3/4" exterior plywood at $29 each from Lowe's.
One all glass 135 is $303 excluding freight and the custom build fee I'd have to pay to have the tank 72x24x18 instead of 72x18x25 from glasscages.com. It'll probably cost me less than the price of 2 to make 6.
Nice...when I did mine, I used two part epoxy resin from MAS epoxies. It was super easy to work with, low VOC so it doesn't smell too awful bad when you are working on it, and tintable. I'm changing the color of the tank so so I'm using the solid colored epoxy paint from Aquatic Ecosystems this time around.
