Pond construction, from dreams to reality!

Well pond needs to be moved completely! It just doesn't get enough sun. The 1st picture is of yesterday morning & the 2nd is yesterday evening. You can clearly see where the sun hits the pond and the other side still has ice AND snow on it where as other ponds in my area have been nearly ice free for weeks. Bad news about this though is that the only other spots it can go there is a shed which will need to come down or is out of the planned fenced area so now we're talking a lot of work and/or $$. So, pond construction is currently postponed.

But, I am trying to find enough courage to bring up the fact that I want to build a small deck pond on the front porch for the summers so we will see what happens! :D

but mys, I believe the sun will hit it differently with the change of seasons and Daylight savings time and everything.... you sure you are ready to throw in the towel? You've already done so much work...

I know the sun will hit soon but it will be too hard to keep it clear during the Winter & restrict opening time etc. Plus all the other reasons we don't like it here, house reflection, close to house, limited surrounding area etc.. I am not throwing in the towel, definitely not! I just need some time to work out it's new BETTER (bigger) location. I just see it as a very early upgrade. :D

This is the main reason I didn't want to finish it in the fall, I wanted to see how it would winter in the shady corner.

+1 on waiting a little longer to see how the angle of the sun hits in the weeks/months to follow.

Add a little water movement and all the ice will disappear....

I just wanted to let you guys know that I am making progress towards the restart of the pond project. This will not be the pond update you all want but it's got lots of pictures. :D

First of all, we took out the pond and filled it in the very next day! This is what it looks like today, the sun situation has not gotten much better & we really were not happy with the restricted space in that 18'x20' corner.

Now let's take a tour towards the area the pond will be located in.

We are working on adding fencing for the dogs & the pond so there will be a gate between those 2 posts.

The big propane tank will be leaving VERY soon! Also we made the garden square, it used to have a large bump out in the back.

There is the shed that is coming down.

There will be a fence/gate running from the deck (on the left) to the end of the solar panels closest to us in the photo. The fence runs all the way back to the other shed in the background.

Picture is taken right outside the garden, kinda around the shed that is coming down. Yes another shed, I will have to camouflage that one somehow. Fencing will run from the back of the white shed all the way to the garden.

That stump is going to be a PITA!

Moving around the shed

And all that fencing will be gone.

The total area for the pond and sitting area is about 40' x 50' so this will be a major upgrade. It is MAJOR work though too. With reconstructing the garden, putting up all that fencing, tearing down the shed which has an OLD concrete floor probably about 1' thick, digging that stump up AND all the other projects we have going on I am not sure the pond will even get put in this year. Which IS a bummer but it is going to be SO well worth it.

This area does get LOTS of sun though, close to 12 hours. How difficult is that gonna make my life?

Also how many pond plants actually need soil, besides lilies?

As for that stump I could send you some East Texas termites. They'd have that baby below ground in no time, course then you would have to get rid of them or wait until winter. Good luck on the restart and thanks for posting.

Thanks for the offer but I think I'll pass! :D

The question about plants needing soil may seem a little odd but I have read a few sources that say they grow their pond plants bare rooted in between rocks. This seems like a good idea when you look at the prices of pond plant baskets & aquatic soil not to mention not having to see the basket in the pond. I worry about the roots damaging the liner though and pretty much every source says the growth is not as good as it is with soil. How do you guys plant your pond plants? Marginals mostly.

All of my pond plants are in plain ol plastic nursery pots. Soil is plain ol 'dug it out of the corner of the yard' dirt, covered with a 1-2 inch layer of pea gravel for camoflauge (sp?) and to keep the fish from trashing the roots too much. I have heard that plain kitty litter is good, too, and I know Muske has plant pockets built into his pond that hold gravel and pond muck, and the plants are directly buried in those. Check out some of his posts, I know he mentions them in there somewhere.

Yes, the pots show for awhile, but they grow a layer of 'hair' pretty quickly and then you don't even notice them. I do re-pot my plants every year or so, and divide them when they outgrow their pots.
