Poor Betta

Hmmm. Good insight. Thank you. I bought three betta bulbs at petco and put 2 in the 35g and 1 in the betta's 1.5g. The 2 in the 35g are growing rapidly...probably because it has a nicer light...so I'll move all three to that tank and when they grow up, I'll replace his fake plant with one of them. Thanks Tay

I believe even tho bettas are labyrinth fish, the 1" per 1g rule should still apply to them. It's depressing yes to see them cramped in such tiny containers, but it is what it is.

People who actually care and have common sense (not saying all people are senseless, just misinformed) are heartbroken to see such things.

Why should they be treated any different than any other fish? I find bettas to be beautiful fish, and mine have their own personalities.

I have actually seen and heard "horror stories" about poor betta's that are sold in places like walmart, petco & petsmart. People seeing one empty container on the shelf because some idiot put 2 males in one tiny container together to see them fight. It's sick to me. I see SOOOO many that I would love to rescue. But we do what we can with what we have. And that's what counts :)

No problem. It sounds like a great idea. And he will benefit from it. I will be putting real plants in my 40 this week also. Hopefully if I can afford it. I need a new tank for Dexter, he had to be moved out of the divided 10 gallon so I could treat his fins.

Just make sure to keep that water nice and clean. Betta's are hearty fish, but fish all the same.

I'm sure he appreciates what you're doing! :)
 
Did you name him Dexter after the show? If so, did you watch the season premiere last night? I'm about to watch it in 5,4,3,2,1...neeeeeooooowwww

I thought it was great as well, except that it was very sad...I hoped for something kind of crazy but it kinda just tied up loose ends from the previous season...i dunno. That IS what season premiers are supposed to do but lets not get too :topic:

New information on my betta. Changed substrate to sand and upgraded to live plants. I took some anacharis from my 35G and planted it in here. I know that cories are meant to be in groups but could I put one in here to clean the sand or should I try and find shrimp or a snail? It's a very small tank and I haven't seen shrimp at any LFS here.

i wouldn't put a single cory in there, he'd be lonely without buddies.

a few ramshorn snails would work ok.

as for 'cleaning the sand', that is your job, not the fishes'.
 
Its just that my 35g stays sooo clean all on its own because the cories clean the sand like crazy and the pleco and snail clean the glass
 
I agree no cories. You could add trumpet snails to keep your sand aerated & for a little cleanup... and I think you've got too much in there... I'd just do 1-1.25".

Just use your hand for a light swish during water changes - super easy. The whole idea of sand is poop sits on top for easy cleaning. And bettas don't poop much!
