Well, I was an idiot today. :( I was using a syringe to suck up some water in my 2 gallon to rinse the duckweed from behind the filter, not really paying great attention, and bam, I managed to suck up my betta. Thankfully I got his tail, and not his body (if one can be thankful for such a thing). But now he has a hole in the middle of his tail where a chunk of the fin was torn away and I have major guilt. I've never seen a fin injury quite like this (normally you see tears from the edge, not holes in the middle), so I'm not sure if he'll heal correctly.

fish are resiliant. He'll survive I'm sure, whether it grows back or not I couldn't tell ya.

Hi webcricket,

I got some angels a while back and some of their fins were completely gone. But they did eventually grow back.

Hope your betta's tail grows back!

ive had a dwarf gourami where his fin had a couple of holes in them. it looked like somone took a mini hole puncher and down the length of his fin and put little holes in them (it was really a little CAE) and he healed up fine

That's good to hear! Hopefully my guy will heal up fine too. He just looks terrible now, I can't help feeling awful about it! I may pick up some Melafix to see if it'll help him heal faster.

yeah, some melafix will probably help it a little, other than that bettas are very hardy, so other than being terrified (maybe he wanted to fight the syringe) he'll be OK.

i heard melafix burns the lungs on a betta, bettafix is the "diluted" version made for betta. i would suggest getting that instead

I am using the Melafix at a diluted dosage (treating 2 gallons with a 1 gallon dosage). He's on his second day and appears to be fine, normal behavior and appetite, color, etc. I'll keep that in mind though...maybe I'll up the water changes to every 3 days so the concentration doesn't get too high. Extra clean water can't hurt healing fins either!
