Hi, I would like to keep a porcupine puffer a lone, I plan on making the tank FOWLR. Depending on tank size but probaly about 90lbs of rock so it has a decent filter. I have had experience with a 90g fo tank with a canister filter. I ended up getting ich that would not go away, i tried everything, what would happen is I could get the ich off the fish by doing dips but it would come right back, i even did the low salt method correctly. It really scared me away from saltwater as I lost a dog face puffer that I was close to. I want to take another shot at it and this time try taking a canister filter out of the situation and add live rock. Is a 90g just to small for this guy? My feeling is maybe in when he grows up he might get to long for a 18" wide tank, your thoughts?

And my other question is about filtration, I want to make a simple basic sump that will house a skimmer, a middle compartment that will hold some rich live sand and live rock, maybe algae and a small PC light.

thanks

the tank might get to small later on but if u get a tiny guy it might work out....
as for the lighting and other stuff sounds good but for fish like that that get ich a lot if i were u id get a UV sterilizer...its worth the money. also i dont like sumps much ans have always turned to natural filtration or refugums with skimmers. id recommend a skimmer cause puffers leave a a mess behind. as fo sumps someone else will have to chime in cause i hate them.

The sump he mentioned was basically a refugium with a skimmer... thats probably a good idea. What do you mean by you did dips to cure the ich? You're best bet is to buy live stock that appear to be healthy, if they come with ich... a UV sterilzer wouldn't help... you could always set up a "hospital tank" to treat it with copper based medication.

UV kills things that pass through the bulb... if its on the fish it can't pass through the UV light.

it kills the MPL(microscopic planktonic larva) of the parasite......i have used one for years and it has worked well..it cant kill the adults that are safe on the fish but when the cyst burst the free swimming young can get fried in the uv...get the right wattage and it will only kill sensitive organisms and the large stronger ones can survive...plus most the wanted microfauna and bacteria are in the rocks and sand. if baby pods get fried...thats why u use a refugum.

it helps..i didnt say it prevents or cures....but wouldnt u rather shorten the odds of reproduction of the next generation and avoid medications that hurt the fish more than help? or a "reef safe" med that doesnt work well either. the main form of "ich in saltwater isnt Ichthyophthirius multifilis but is Cryptocaryon irritans which is protected under the fishes slime layer form most medications that arent copper based.
Ichthyophthirius multifilis is really only in freshwater we just use the term "ich"
