Yesterday i noticed my Birchir (polypterus senegalus cuvier) being way too lathargic compared to his normal self. i was thinking possible constipated as he scarfed the night before, so i planned to see how he was today before giving him an epsom dip. we'll i did that, but have noticed today he body is looking bad. in the pictures below, you will see a clear line running on an angle to his body, where the tail section is pale. also, the dorsal fin in missing the "web" of the fin now in the pale area...and is happening on the caudal fin too.

Basically he looks like crap and im trying to figure out hat is wrong. water checks out at:
NO3: 19ppm
NO2: 0
Ammo: 0

Interesting never seen something like that before. Is it a straight line on the other side too or is it only on that one side? I'm thinking it could be heater burn but I'm not really sure. You can try adding melafix and pimafix and keep your water really clean.

yeah, it follows the same line on the other side. its like the back of him is dying off. never saw something like this either so im stunped. got him in QT with a Mela, but he dont seem to be doing too good

yeah, that doesn't look good. is the back half of him very pink? maybe he got scared and freaked out in the tank, hitting something and damaging his insides. does he move the back half of his body or just pull along with the front fins?

hes just pulling along

Might not be a spinal injury though that's a possiblity. If he's got in infection or an inflamation it could very well be pinching a nerve. He does'nt seem to have a lot of external swelling, but there's definitly an indentation at the inflmation site. Have you treated for internal parasites? I hate to throw everything on the shelf at him, but he seems in a bad way. Let us know what you try, and how it works. Good luck man, I hope he pulls through.

no treatments... yet. i firmly believe in NOT overdoing the chems, until i know what im dealing with.

there is also a very distinct red line showing down both sides where the skin tones change... like a seperation line.
