Looks like a candy platy. The baby will survive if it has a place to hide from the adults, as they may eat it if they can. Adding some java moss will increase the odds of survival. Most livebearers have 5-30 babies at a time, so there may be more in there, or they may have already been eaten. However, if you don't have plans for the babies (ie, another tank to put them in, homes for them to go to as adults) this is not a bad thing. Livebearers can quickly overstock a tank, causing many problems for you and themselves.

thanks for the reply, i found out what the name of the fish is its a "swordtail",

i looked it up onanother tread and found someone with the same problem, and someone replied saying

"She's going to have more fry in 28 -30 days. And, she's going to keep having fry every 28-30 days.
The Swordtails can have up to 30 babies, just multiply that by 12 months. That's alot of swordtails. "

soemone else sugested leaving the fry in there and just keep the adults well fed and creating lots of hiding places for the babies.

should i seperate the mother from the rest in a net, just incase she has some more, or would she of had them all already by now, do they all come out at once?

thank you :)

Yep its a male swordtail
do you want to keep the babies? If so provide hiding spots or remove the fry once they are born into another tank. If you have males and females you will get a constant flow of babies.

well im only starting off with my tank, dont really want to be left with a tank full of the same fish, but i dont want the adults to eat the babies, should i get i get rid of the females. or what other options are there if i dont want to keep the babies?
thanks

I suppose if you don't want any fry at all, then your only options are to remove the females entirely (either to another tank or try to take them back to your LFS) or let nature run its course. IMO I would keep all of the swordtails... Most/all of the fry will be eaten if not given adequate hiding places, but that's how it would work in the wild as well!

Im afraid your only real choices are get a second tank for the babies or let them get eaten. It doesnt sound nice but trust me after you go through your 3rd or 4th batch of babies you'll just leave them in there to get eaten rather then trying to raise them and get rid of them.

yup...that's how it is. I just got my 1st batch of fry and setup my old 20g. They cute, but i'm gonna have to find ways to get rid of them cause i have like 40 fry.

anybody know if lfs in the GTA takes babies? ...or anybody want swordtale fry?

...1 of my females look pregnent again =T ...dunno if i'm gonna interfere with nature this time.

Allan!

thanks for the replies, ive been watching the tank for the last while and just now when i went over i seen one fry lying against the lower entrance to my filter ( i have a Juwel tank and filter) and then he went into the filter,
If he doesnt come out will this cause any problems?
what should i do to stop them going in there?
thanks
Jonny
