preparing driftwood for freshwater

I use bleach to soak my driftwood at about 1 cup to 5 gallons in a large plastic tote. I soak for one week. I then pour the water out and replace with fresh water. I change this water out every three or four days until chlorine test of the rinsewater is zero. Sometimes it takes three or four weeks to leach all the Cl out if the piece of wood is big enough.

i would think that wood you find in the sea is going to be fairly sterile, for FW aquarium purposes... i'd just wash it real well.
anyone wanna back me up on this? i would think the salinity of the sea would drive most living terrestrial organisms out their skins, so to speak...

ya boiling it will work .. then the soaking till it sinks..
but while we are on the subject of drift wood.. i have 4 really nice dry pieces that i know are safe ..but just very dry .. what i want to know is how long does it take for very dry drift wood to soak up the water ???.. it has allready been soaking for about 4 days now ...

One of our pieces took about a week and a half. We just put it in a bucket of water with a brick on top to keep it down. Checked back every few days.
LOL.. i dont think i can give up my bathtub for a year... :argue: ...lol..
it is soaking in the bathtub right now with very clean towels and a rock ornament on top to weigh it down.. i cant wait till they take up water .. they are such nice pieces of wood that we got from ebay .. from a closed out pet store.. $3.50 each piece .. average about 14 inches long.. and the people were very nice..
