products that lower ammonia ?

understocking not changing your filter media and water changes. thats how i keep my ammonia at zero at all times.

Note: your ammonia will only be at zero if your tank is cycled, If your tank is not cycled keep your ammonia under .25 ppm by doing water changes remember to use a quality dechlorinator like prime, and always match your tanks temperature.

Doesnt' Prime alter the ammonia reading though during cycling?
I was going to get some but didnt' want it to throw off my readings on my 55.

Yep, have to do water changes even after the tank is cycled. It's so important! For the first few weeks after setting up our tank, water changes were a two person operation. Now, I can do it myself and it doesn't take but 10-15 minutes.

Prime or AmQuel + are good conditioners to add at water changes.

Prime will make ammonia not harmful to your fish, but shouldn't hurt your cycle.

I might get some just to be safe. There are days when Im only home when I am sleeping. It just bothers me when I cant check the levals.

Seachem's Prime is a water conditioner, so if you want you can switch to that from whatever your using now. It converts the ammonia into a less harmful form that your biologoical filtration will still absorb. just know that if your tank is fully cycled, you will probably not see ammonia. and if you do, just to a water change.

That's interesting. I used Ammo-Lock to reduce the ammonia level when I overdosed the tank at the start of my cycle. If it merely converted the ammonia into its safer form, it should still show up on the ammonia test kit but the test kit showed a big reduction in level after the ammo-lock dosing. Doesn't this mean that the Ammo-Lock binds up the ammonia completely? Or do the different products work in different ways?
