Pseudotropheus saulosi in a 40 gallon??

You need to add something in the tank, so that you can boost the establishment of beneficial colonies of bacteria that work in the tank to decompose ammonia and nitrites. These bacteria need ammonia and nitrite in order to nourish themselves and to form colonies in the tank. When they establish in the tank, the cycling is completed.
Now, how can you add ammonia safely to start this cycle? Old fashion way was to add some cheap fishes in a new tank for a few days, until ammonia and nitrites readings are at zero. At this time the tank is fully cycled and safe to remove the cheap fishes and to add immediately the fishes you really want. New fashion ways don't use fishes to cycle but something not living instead. For example, if you add small amounts of fish food daily to a new tank, ammonia will be produced to start the cycle. At the end of the cycle (ammonia and nitrites readings at 0), you may do a partial water change; re check both readings and add the fishes if everything is OK.
If you don't add anything to start the cycle, the tank will never be ready to add fishes. You need ammonia and nitrites liquid kits to measure both parameters during the cycle. Good luck!

Okay thanks for all the info that really cleared things up!!! I'll start adding food to it, all that I've done so far is add some cycling liquid that came with my water conditioner

During the first part of the cycling period, ammonia levels will go up and then down to zero. Later in the process, nitrites levels will rise and then will get back to zero. When both readings are back to zero, that means you have enough colonies of beneficial bacteria in the tank and that the cycle is completed. The tank's water is then safe for your fishes (in this case for your Ps. saulosi).

Remember: just SMALL AMOUNTS of food each day. During the process, you can do a few partial water changes of let's say 33% each and add your cycling liquid after each water change. Keep monitoring each day the ammonia and nitrites levels.

How much food should I add? Or should i get fish which is better?

Never mind you answered my question lol we posted a min apart

Thanks so much!!!

If food: just a pinch you can get using 2 fingers.
You know, it is your decision. I'm an old fashion hobbyist. Many friends here will kill me if I tell you to buy a few cheap goldfishes to cycle the tank and then give them to a friend or return them to your LFS after the cycle is completed but...why not! OH GOD, HAVE MERCY!!!

Thanks so much!!!

You are truly welcome! Now I better go to sleep or my wife will kill me before my friends here can do it!!! :lipssealedsmilie:

Ha ha ha have a good night thank you so so so much!!!
