Purchasing a canister filter

I think Reddog has the best advice. Canister filters really are the best way to go - they're all good. But make sure you get one that's rated for 2x or 3x the capacity of your tank. The tank size rating you see on the box is only relevant when no filter media is present. Of course, as you increase media, you decrease water flow.

If you get enough feedback, you can get an opinion / experience that would cover practically every make and model.

In reality they are all pretty good - Eheim is likely the Rolls Royce (design, little/no bypass, and overall durability). However, the others (Fluval, etc.) are also very good.

Get one and put it on your tank then you too can offer an opinion about "how my filter is the greatest in the world" (LOL).

I like Eheims and Magnums, I use Eheims as Bio-filters, combo with HOT Magnums for water turnover and water polishing.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I fixed the Penguin filter for now, and will hopefully buy my new canister filter next week...after I sort through all the comments and make a decision! :lipssealedsmilie:
