Purigen -- Which is the best place to put it?

I wasn't sure what Purigen is so I just looked it up in my Big Al's book. I'm just wondering what the reasons for using it are. Is there something specific in the water you are trying to remove? Since it removes ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate wouldn't using it starve your biological filter?

Nope! Purigen actually deals with those nasty DOCs :)

These are my two favorite Purigen threads:

There are some heavy planted tank people advocating Purigen in those threads. If they say it's great, I'm going to try it, too.

Read closer, it doesn't remove ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. It controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds.

Like I've said before.I think of it more as another filtration media. If water changes fixed everything there would be no use for floss, the water changes would remove the waste.

Roan .... I'm not certain what else you use your Magnum for -- is it a 350? Anyways, FYI I have been picking up replacement micron filters from Petsmart.com for $7.49ea with FREE shipping! If you buy 3 items or more from their "Magnum Replacement Media and Accessory" link you get an additional 10% off.
Good to know, thanks :)

It's a 250 and I only use it for occasional water polishing, which I won't need to do anymore since I'm putting Purigen in my Eheim. Most of the time I use it to either cycle a new tank or to start KH buffering on a tank I plan to inject CO2 into.

Exactly!

I'm very excited about this product. Sounds like a real find.

I can't find a flowchart for Eheim but I plan on getting the Rena Filstar. I would assume they all use the same flow so I'll post a link to show you the Rena. . .
Ah! The water comes in the bottom and out through the top, so the Purigen needs to go on top. I'll double check with the Eheim web site.

Thanks!

What kind of vals do you have? I know there are a few that are very touchy-feely, but I only have caulescens and they don't seem to have a problem with salt (1 tsp per g thus far, knock on wood).

These were Giant Vals. I think its an oddball situation or something because these plants are usually almost indestructable. One note I must make is make sure you rinse the purigen very well if you plan on putting it in a canister filter otherwise the high pressure will push whatever tiny beads that did not rinse out into your tank.

Aye, make certain you use a fine micron bag (Seachem makes "The Bag") to place the Purigen in =) You don't want the fish to think it's food coming out the in flow...lol

And Prez ;)

Nod nod. I did buy "the Bag" when I bought the Purigen and will rinse it well, too. Putting it in tomorrow when I waterchange the 75g.

I have a Eheim 2213, and I just filled up "The Bag" with Purigen. I added about 80 mls of a 200 ml jar for my 29 gallon, and just kind of flattened out the bag a bit to have the biggest contact area with the water through the canister and put the Purigen after the substrate in the Eheim but before the course sponge. Before Purigen, my water was always kind of murky and cloudy, from white water, green water, and the water just didn't look clear. With the Purigen instead of carbon, by water is spotless. I wasn't a believer at first, but my water quality is just amazing after using this stuff compared to before. Water is crystal clear. Purigen is the best $10 I ever spent in aquaria.
