Purple Frogspawn Frag: Questions

Thank you so much! From your description I think I may have gotten a feeding response from it today. I shot a tiny bit of mysis at it but when the polyps folded in I got scared and thought I did it wrong! You guys have been most helpful!

What's your alkalinity? I had problems with my alk when I first started and had some corals recede to nubs. When I get my parameters in check they came back. Could you also list your pH and calcium.

Also, the reason I asked if it was fragged correctly is because i've watched some videos of how to frag them and seen that typically the heads are just snapped or cut off. It kind've appears like mine has been cut off, but then also cut down two other areas of the head, like maybe they took one solid head and broke it into three different ones and mine is the middle. There are definately two rotary tool cuts besides the base cut (which is attacked to a reef plug).

I'm just wondering if this way of fragging may have caused additional damage to begin with and if it will affect how/if it is able to grow in the future?

*Also note* I'm not exactly sure how these grow to begin with!

I just ran a test recently my calcium was as 450 ppm and my alk was just a little in the low part of the safe range (don't remember the exact number on the chart). I've got a buffer so I could try using that. I will run another test before and after I do this weeks water change (I typically do 10-20% a week).

-none of the other corals show any sign of distress, doing a dip on the Frogspawn today, wish me luck!

The vast majority of the frogspawns I've seen in the hobby are the branching variety. They grow as each head splits into two (or possibly even three -- I swear one of mine has done this), each head builds more skeleton (growing it's own branch), and the process repeats.

There's also a variety that grows in more of a wall form, which I've had less than stellar results keeping alive long term despite how easy the branching variety has been.

If it was fragged by cutting apart heads that were still joined together by living flesh, it is possibly that it was damaged when it was fragged. The way it looks to me though, is that it had receded previously (noticeably darker dead skeleton) and then some more recently (bright white skeleton). I do see the cuts you're talking about -- I can't really decide one way or the other what they're from.

Give it time, keep your parameters in check, and feed it a couple of times a week if you see that it is accepting the food.

Wall are nto common and would not have been fragged that way. I have what I would call a wall FS and would liken it's skeleton and growth to that of an elegance where there are not new heads but new mouths as the skeleton meanderingly grows.

Did the dip. Now it's just a waiting game. I'll try to keep you all posted on if it improves. Poor little thing.

Well the dip seems to have done it some good already. It accepted a little food today and had extended fully. If not for the branches the peppermint tore off it would look very similar to how it first did. All your guys' advice has really helped out and I want to say thanks because I had no clue what I was doing! <3
