Python siphons...............

Thanks Ladies & Gent's...

How do you rinse your filter media if you suck your change water out with the Python and it goes down the drain? For the newbies, a tap water rinse of your filter will kill your bacteria. I bought a 50 foot Python and don't use it. I have to suck water out of the tank to rinse my filter media with a syphon and bucket anyway. Hooking the Python up, having it leak and spray my kitchen down, and having to put it away and get water all over the floor in the process is not worth the trouble. Plus, I don't like mixing my Dechlor in the tank....I don't want to put more in "just to make sure" and I don't want chlorine/chloromine touching my fish. I guess I'm the only one, but using a bucket doesn't bother me - I feel better about the water change when I'm done. It was less messy, more accurate, and safer. JMO.

I have a gallon-size rubbermaid pitcher under my tank on the bottom shelf I use just or fish. I empty about 3 to 3.5 gallons into a five gallon bucket that I use to float my biowheels and rinse filter media in. The rest is sink bound. Now that summer is here, I'll likely use a hose out in the yard to drain and vac so the water feeds my lawn.

I have the same thing for rinsing my media, I couldn't imagine useing buckets to change ~40 gals of water....to each his own. :)

I say the same thing.... it is a pain to take a 50 footer out but I think using the python far outweighs the bucket-march. However, if there's just topping off the tank, I would bring the watering can......

I use a standard gravel vac and siphon some water into a 5 gal bucket for rinsing out filter media, then i shouve the end of the gravel vac into a standard garden hose and vac the gravel directly into a floor drain in my basement.

Then when i'm done vaccuming I switch the hose around and hook it up to my laundry tub, adjust the temp, and let her fly back into my tank, adding declhor into the incoming stream.

It really works like a charm!!
