Question about Penguin 350 Filter

I have the penguin 350 running on my 90 gallon tank. My question is, where is the actual filter material located? I take the top off and I see two slots at the back behind the biowheels. But these slots just appeared to be filled with rocks from what I can see. It doesn't look like carbon or filter material. Maybe I am nubs but any help would be appreciated.

I have the same type of filter as you do just smaller but they're nearly the same. I just got a good deal on mine online and still had it bookmarked. I found a photo for you to look at that should help here

Click on 'More Images' and it will show some pretty good pics of the filters with the top open and media sticking out in the area you describe as having rocks in it. Your model should be the one at the bottom. I think you need Rite size C cartridge for it from what I read at Petco. Did you get yours used? I'm a newbie and the packing that come with it got me going pretty well and so far so good and my goldies like it. Hope that helps out some.
 
i have this filter i love it. it takes 1 filter cart on each side and the other slot is for another filter pad or the media tray you can fill with whatever you want and it slides into the slot just behind the bio wheels on each side and the filter carts slide in the slot to the back of the filter with the blue material on the filter pads facing the back of the filter. the water flows thru the front of the blue pad out the back side then thru flows thru the back of the media tray then flows out the front and spins your bio wheels on its way back to the tank. I think the 350's work better then the emperor 400's because the 350's dont have that spray bar the 400's do and the spray bar is a pain to keep the little holes cleaned out if you dont then the bio wheels dont spin you dont have that problem with the 350. i own 12 emperor 400's and i wish i would have went with all 350's instead due to ease of maintance and less parts to have to keep clean. not to say the 400's dont do a great job they due a excellent job of keeping my tanks crystal clear but i am tired of cleaning them little spray bar holes. i run 2 filter pads on each side then when i replace the one that filters the water first i slide the used 2nd pad into the slot i threw the old one way and put the new one into the slot behind the bio wheel. that way i always have seasoned filter material in my filter. hope this was helpful info.
 
Do you have any noise issues with yours? I thought it would be quieter but it seems a bit noisey. I've rinsed out the impeller chamber very well but still get the noise. I've noticed this for a while but really paid it no never mind until just recently.

Have you taken the whole filter off the tank , impellor out, and held it upside down while you rinse out the impellor housing? This should solve your prob, as well as check the magnet to make sure there isnt any hair or anything wrapped around it.

Did you buy your filter used from somebody? it sounds like they replaced the filter cartridges with lave rock or something similar for biological filtration. I'm not sure how effective that would be on a penguin350 (I just use the cartridges) but that may be what you're looking at.

I have taken it off the tank and rinsed from the kitchen sink using the spayer. I'm pretty sure there is nothing wrapped around the impeller.
 
Yes you nailed it. Where the blue filter cartridge fits I only have rocks in both of those slots. I tried digging down deeper and I only find more rocks. While filtration is important I think that these rocks are giving my filter problems. My bioweels are barely spinning and most of the water comes flowing out down the sides of my intake tube. Do you kind of know what I mean? I can try and clarify if anyone needs me to. Thanks again guys.
