Questions about Firemouths!!

Firemouths are semi-aggressive cichlids.
Corys are peaceful community fish. ....they'd eventually be a snack for a growing firemouth.

Corys would be ok as long as they are bigger and they have plenty of places to hide. If you have small ones less tha 2" I would not suggest it. Also w/ play sand rinse it very well then vac it to get the small particles out. Also plants do not do well in sand since it is very compact no nutrients can get to the roots.

alright, what i'm assuming is that I should go by the "any thing that won't fit in his mouth" rule when choosing tankmates.

Am I correct in assuming this or would a firemouth show aggression towards fish that it couldn't eat?

deep body tetras that grow over an inch should be fine with firemouths. I have Red eye Tetras and Congo Tetras with mine

Just to clarify, I said I wouldnt use them because they have caused more problems for me than what they're worth. Imo = In My Opinion, Ime = In My Experience. I have been keeping fish for 11 years and I've kept everything from goldfish to discus to L046 zebra plecos, and have spawned firemouths among others. Peace.

Got my firemouth this morning...currently in a 10 gallon until I get my 29 within the week. very pale colors right now; it's definitely a juvenile but I have no idea what sex. I'll post pics soon

Here are pictures of my 10Gal temporary tank:

set up today using an extra sponge I placed in my established filter a week ago.

Tomorrow i'll add a cheap background and sit back & wait for my 29G

HELP! my firemouth hasn't moved from behind the large pastic plant. He/She just sits there fanning its fins but not really swimming; more like resting on the sand. Is this normal at all? When I purchased the fish, they were all doing the same thing in the store. Could it be stress from the move?

Sounds like you picked up a unhealthy one mine is always moving. Although it could be stress did you check the temp?

about 75 with a 1-2 degree variation because the tank is in an unheated shed.
