i need to seperate these fish quick, i'm going to get a ten gallon can you tell what i would need to get this tank going. whats the best affordable filter available? i saw this one called aquaclear, is this good? do i need a lid for this tank? is petsmart cheaper than petco? do blue gouramis do well with platy? how bout molly? should i just make the other tank like this 2mollies 6danios and some cheap, non growing algea eater, and ablue gourami. what else do i need?

I don't know about your fish questions, but walmart has a full 10g set up kit for about $50. Good luck!

Often you just have to look around for a good deal on suppiles.

YAY i found a 10gallon kit with tank lid light heater filter and aqua safe and something else for the water, fish flakes, and a fish net for only 29.99 super cool! so i'm cycling right now, fishless. do i still have to do water changes with fishless cycle or after fish go in? my plan : 2 dwarf gourami, two yellow mollis that have to stripes on tail dont know what they're called, and two black tetras sound good?

If you put 2 Dwarf Gouramis in a 10 gallon tank it won't be long till you only have one so save the few dollars and spare a life.

I'm not even sure I'd put long tailed mollies or the Gourami with the Black tetras, I'm not exactly sure what tetras you're talking about but most are fin nippers and prefer schools to downsize aggression.

i cant believe what i'm hearing everytime i think i have a good stock going someone tells me its all wrong, this fish stuff is confusing. at the store they told me this pick was ideal. so please give me a good group of lsits on good 10 gallon fish.

one word of advice: unless you really trust your LFS, don't listen to a clerk about what fish will do well together in a tank. The best resource you have for stocking are the folks here who know what works.

A ten gallon can make a great tank, but they really do not hold that many fish. If you want some help why not tell us one type of fish you really want (or a couple of picks). Then we can give you some good suggestions.

Also the kits can be good deals, but the equipment is not always reliable (the tank itself is most likely fine). So, in the future you may have to replace a few pieces. Right now I am actually using a cheap Wal-mart kit. So far so good, but just keep an eye on things.

Extra advice if you have a hanging filter you ca add a small aquarium sponge in the open space to give bacteria extra room to grow. This way if you ever have to replace the filter cartridge you won’t throw out all your bacteria. Even still you are better off just rinsing off cartridges in old tank water then replacing them. That is unless you need new carbon to take out a toxin.

You’re right it is complicated, but start slow and you will learn. :read:

hey jennypenny, she has been listing what she's looking at, but unfortunately the conversating is taking place across a couple threads so it's hard to follow ;)

all that aside I think the last list was pretty good, but I would just get one dwarf gourami unless you are absolutely sure you have a male and a female picked out. 2 males in a tank that small may take exception to one another and before long you'll only have 1 (like IceH2O was saying ;) )

I think I know what kind of "black tetras" you're talking about, as most of the chain stores around here have them regularly. If it's what I think it is, they're really called blackskirt tetras, and look like this:
blackskirt.jpg

like all tetras they are a schooling fish, so really they would like to be in as big a group as you can fit in the tank (maybe 4 of these instead of the 2 mollies?), but can tend towards being nippy sometimes. hard to say if they'll nip at your gourami, but they might.

realistically, you may want to go with 1 dwarf gourami (be sure it's a dwarf) and 3-4 mollies (1 male and at least 2 females for maximum happiness). they should get along reasonably well :)
