so i bought my ammonia for my fishless cycling but it contains surfactant should i just keep using it or go out and buy some ammonia from ace hardware

I would go out and buy a bottle of pure ammonia... after doing many large water changes.
 
On the other hand, I'd use it to cycle the tank, then do two big water changes to dilute out any remaining "stuff" the day before I put fish in it.

You're gonna hear both sides... either way will work.
 
I just went out and bought the ace hardware janitorial strength ammonia which is a bad idea to smell
 
thanks for the replies guys i really appreciate it. I have another question: how much ammonia should i add? I was thinking i add a bit, test and if its not enough i add a bit more and test again until i have the correct amount.
 
I would answer your question with another question--how big is your tank? I would also like to add another related question. After adding the ammonia how long does one wait to test the water to see how much (in PPM) ammonia you've added?

I would do exactly that, add a little bit, wait a few minutes (for the ammonia to mix),test, and if it is not enough repeat.
