RANT

Threads like this give people the chance to let off steam. I feel they can be beneficial, at leas they arent blowing up at specific members. That is never good.

hmmm...just don't ask Zigman what happened last time he blew up a friend....

Ain't ranting fun? ;) I've been a member of this forum for quite some time now and this kind of stuff just comes with the territory. Part of the normal 'ebb and flow' in a forum's life. I advise people to keep things in perspective and don't sweat the small stuff.

And folks with absolute no experience posting as if they do.....

I think most of the time when I try to help out I sort of put a disclaimer in there that before following my advice, they should have a more experienced member chime in as well since I am still a noob only doing this for around 9 months. I bet 80% of my post are talking about questions I had.

It seems like in many (most?) forums, people who are repeatedly disruptive (as in constantly arguing and stirring up trouble) are banned...I don't necessarily think that's a good thing (especially if these people haven't been spoken to first) but you can see that it doesn't happen often here. One problem that I've seen in other forums (not just fish forums) is the abuse of power by moderators, banning people who they don't like or who talk back to them. That's just silly - I really feel like banning should be a last resort, except in the case of spammers and scammers. However, I do think that people should be spoken to. I don't think threats are necessary, just sort of a "can you tone it down?" would probably be enough for most civilized people.

I'm certainly not perfect and have said some harsh words in this forum before. I have a temper, and try my best to keep it in check, but I don't always succeed :evil_lol: I know there are a few members who tend to push my buttons...I try to ignore them without going so far as to hit the ignore button.

Some people need to be reminded that not everyone is a forum junkie who lives on the internet. Many people sign up looking for advice/help and never even think about using the search function because they are new to forums all together. Or, in many cases, the search function is horrible and never shows correct results (as is the case with another forum I've been a member of for years, and always has been that way). Don't forget that without questions, a forum becomes dead. Sometimes you need repetitive questions to provide site traffic.

EXACTLY, I have gone to use search functions on forums many times to search for topics that probably have hundreds of threads about them or even an "official" thread, but nothing even close to what I am looking for comes up.

For instance, when I was trying to fix my aquaclear filter I searched loud aquaclear filter, and I found fs threads, aquaclear vs some other filter threads, aquaclear is on sale threads, or just things like that, but nothing regarding how to fix the loud noise, but I KNOW that I had read a thread specifically about a loud aquaclear filter a week before I bought mine. But after about 15 min of searching, I gave up and made a thread.

There should be some "official" threads about certain products such as a testing kit, or something. Better yet, an official petco $1 per gallon sale since there seem to be so many of those threads floating around. I think there should be more threads like that freshwater cycling thread in the newbie forums. Maybe one about fixing a common issue (such as a loud aquaclear filter).

Now I am thinking about saving any ideas on how to help improve a little and then posting in a suggestion thread (if one exist)

Anyway, wasnt this thread about how people ask for advice and then ignore it?

I am almost 100% sure I did that here when I was first starting out. I totally lied and said I was ordering testing kits and stuff when I really never did until now (though I did look at them many times online and in store). I realize that I ignored good advice, and I looked back at some of my earlier post and what I actually did, man do I feel stupid. This time will be different. I ordered the testing kit, I havent stated stocking the tank (other than one guppy who needed to get out of the 1g). I dont know why I ignored the advice, I guess I just wanted to do things a certain way, my way. But after that tank kind of failed, and I put it away for a while (guppy was the last surviving fish, why he ended up in a 1g). But I was looking at him one day, and realized how much it would suck to be him. So now I set up the 10 again and am ready to do things the right way, take advice, hopefully give a little, and keep this tank running as long as I can. 2 years is where I either have to shut it down, or temp have my parents take care of it (which they already said they wouldnt do).

Please don't make me talk about the horrible search function. I absolutely hate the search engine, but when I say that out loud I feel so ungrateful for criticizing a forum that I don't pay a penny to support (I've actually never bought any Monster Aquaria stuff). However it is insane that this search engine, for some reason, does not seem to care that things are in quotes...you might as well not bother trying to search for a specific phrase or set of words, it's impossible.

Anyway I don't think it can improve - perhaps there is a way, but I don't think it would be free. All I can say is that you are soooo much better off using Google.com and searching for whatever you're looking for with site:aquariacentral.com after that.

The search engine used on ultimaterc.com works amazingly well and normally gets exactly what you want in the first 5 or so results. I think it is a custom google search thing that a lot of places are starting to use. I dont know when AC was last updated, but it seems like there are a few things that could use a bit of improvement, and there are def other forums (though not specifically for fish) that have those features.
