For that age, I vote guinea pig. No tail or long legs to pull and less likely to bite if prodded the wrong way. Rats are great, but I think better for an older child. All of our guinea pigs made it to 7 or more years of age.

I have had both - and I vote rat hands down - very friendly and infinately more intelligent. However, regardless of how well your child does with animals, at that age I would only allow your son to handle with direct supervision.

rat hands down here to!!~ they are awsome, and my 6 year old had one and took wonderful care of him. that rat was so loving and sweet. I had guinea pigs, not good. they stink way bad , and can be nippy. also noisy.

Can rats or guinea pigs be house trained?

I know rabbits can be house trained.

rats. i've had guinea pigs, i really don't think they're all that bright or nice. rats can be trained easier and are quite intelligent and friendly.

I HATE RODENTS. Just get a fish like a betta instead or a cat or rabbit. Rodents smell and poop a lot and are terrible and messy. Please take my advice, or you'll regret getting a rodent. And rabbits aren't rodents...

OR GET A CHINCHILLA! If you NEED a rodent, chinchillas are the coolest.
This is the craziest thing I have ever heard. Rabbits make ten times the mess of a rodent Ive had both. I am also alergic and can't stand cats. While Guinea Pigs can be a bit messy Rats are extremely clean and spend a great amount of time grooming themselves. They only time either are messy is when negelcted by there care takers which goes for all animals.

I really dont think a chinchilla is even a little approprate for a young child to hold and play with. Also of course he would be supervised with it. He is great with animals he loves to play with his hermit crabs but really loves mammals so I thought I might try something. May wait till next year depends what I find for the temperment of the animals this year.

I've been around people with pet rats. They are sweet, can be trained to come when called, play games etc. The only negative part is, they don't socialize with small animals well. Dogs, cats, mice, gerbils... If it's the only small mammal in the house, a rat would be an excellent pet.

I did rat sit for six months. Cute little guy named Tofer, never had to close the cage door. Once properly trained, you can take them outside on your shoulder and they stick with you.

rats

even though rabbits can be housetrained, they are no good for kids, they bite and when scared can really tear you up with claws and kicking.
