Rats or Hamsters?

i would have gerbils over hamsters, but mice over gerbils.

random fact, almost every gerbil in america was bred from 40 individuals taken from mongolia in 1964....

sorry, but gerbils are illegal to own in california, OPs state

Rats outshine them all. Great personalities and smart as a whip. We (the vet and assistants included) cried when my last rat died.

I would choose rats. They are easy to socialize and I have 4 of them, and Ive never been bit. Mine take baths twice a week and dont mind it, and are leash trained. THis is just my input. But I wanted to PM you rather than putting it in the threadTAGAIN, IVE NEVER BEEN BIT. Ive had a rat for 5 years and hes still going and they are cleaner than ANY small animal out there.

hamsters, mine is never grumpy, he loves space, and is very active....JUST BE CAREFUL what wheel you get him, because if you get him some metal wheels they can break limbs if they stop suddenly in mid-run and for this reason i reccomend you get a crittertrail cage and a few extra tubes, PANDA BEAR hamsters are the best IMO i have had 5 hamsters and the dwarf hamsteres are horribley grumpy, while pandas are cute, big and usually live long, and are less likely to slither away also, if you hold a hamster correctly they wont slithery-di or slithery-do away they are black and white so they are cute too.

I have the critter trail cages and the tubing. I have the critter trail mini one and the critter trail mini two both BRAN NEW IN BOX for $10 each. I also have a TON of the tubing. Like I said in a PM to the OP, we had a local pet store go out, and I have TONS of small animal supplies and other animal supplies. http://smallanim.digi.imap.cc/

Rats are much better and more playfull, all my hamsters were nippy and scared too easily.Once my wife got over the fact they were rats there fun to watch and play with..

I've had mixed experiences with hamsters. My first eventually allowed me to handle it and it would crawl all over me without biting. It took some time but he never inflicted much pain even from the beginning. The second hamster I had wouldn't even let me reach into its cage without flipping out. My best advice with hamsters is to handle them early and often. The pro's are that they most definitely take up less space. I never found mine to be smelly if I cleaned the tank weekly, kind of like a fish tank.

Never had rats but I would like to someday. I've cared for bunnies in the past and they are a lot of fun, but IMO are poop machines.

that happened to some babies i had... so seperate them as much as possible
