To my knowledge, there is no issue with keeping the two together. I've got ammano and ghost shrimp together with no issues, and I'm looking to get my first cherries soon.
As for water conditions, the best thing to do is have clean water. As long as the water is clean and the ph/hardness isn't way off the scale in either direction, you should be fine.
