Really, really bad news... :(

sorry to hear about this, but if theres one thing you should gain from this is SHOP AT YOUR LFS!!! even if you pay more for stuff than you would online, i would definately shop at the lfs that helped you in this disaster, also, get the word out that this lfs store rocks! no matter how much money you save, an online store cant help you in these situations. hip hip horay to the lfs that helped you!

cracks are a scary thing. One time I broke down my 20g tank for awhile, and about 2 months later I put it back up. It was filled with water and everything, and I looked and saw a crack at the bottom of one of the sides, probably about 4 inches long. It wasnt wet on the outside or anything, so in a moment of desperation, I traced over it with superglue. Well, it has been up and running with no problems for over a year now, so I guess it is just a fluke that it worked.

Does your insurance cover any expense for the floor? (Although you need to be careful about that - most insurance companies immediately raise your rates any time you make a claim - god bless them). Its amazing that you only lost one fish - my best to you and I will be thinking good thoughts that everything works out well.

Excellent point!!! I am a stay at home mom now after 20 yrs being an insurance agent and that statement about claims is so true. As terrible that it is that you lost any fish for that matter and an expensive tank it might not be worth it to submit a claim. Check your deductible first to make sure that the cost of the repair isn't under the deductible and if it is over, that it won't cost more in raised insurance rates for 3 yrs or more than it would to pay for the work yourself.

Just my advise, take care and good luck with it all.

Insurance would cover it, however there is a 500 deductable, rates would go up, and the damage is only around 600$ (just for the floor). So I think we'll skip the insurance claims.

Sorry just put my foot in my mouth without reading further. I just didn't want you to make the same mistake I have seen hundreds of clients do in the past. Good call!!

Oh, we ALWAYS shop there! I praise them because theyre so awesome. We buy everything from them and believe it or not, they're cheaper than petsmart and other LFS's with lots of different items. They do rock, and we completely appreciate what they've done for us.

Now the floors finished, new tank has been filled, and Brads placing plants and driftwood in it as we speak.

Our plants didn't get as much light or CO2 in their temporary 50 Gallon tank so they're not looking their best right now, but we hope they'll perk up within the next few days.

On a sad note, we lost our gold nugget pl*co. The people at the LFS said he had died overnight, probably from all the stress he went through. However, that brings the death toll to 2, so it's not horrible.

Thanks again to everyone for their support and thoughts, they're all greatly appreciated. I'll post some pics as soon as the tank starts looking good again.

A piece of pvc pipe did that? Sheesh, even a 2 foot section weighs less than a pound. Must have hit it perfect. BTW, the bottom is not tempered. Had it been tempered it probably would not have broke, but if it had, the water would have drained nearly instantly, as well as all your gravel, decorations, fish, etc.

I know the bottom isn't tempered.
I didn't say it was.

Yeah, I couldn't believe it did that either, but it hit right on the edge. I think the fact that the rest of the tank had water, gravel, rocks and driftwood contributed to the cracks.
