Well the tons of rain that we have had recently has really caused a nasty flea problem in this area and our dog is no exception. We use Adantix flea stuff and it isn't working. So the next step is to have the house sprayed. Any suggestions on how to do this safely with two aquariums? Freaks me out, but we can't have a bunch of fleas in the house.

Never had a flea problem, but I have had areas sprayed. Just tell them about the tank, how fumes are bad, etc. That and threaten their lives, lol. I don't use Terminix, but a local guy that likes to use safer alternatives to common pesticides. He tries to use the safest (if there is such a thing) chemicals in the business. All his chemicals are actually rated by the FDA as being safe to use around food, hospitals, etc. Obviously not in food, but in the vicinity.

I can honestly say I would recommend treating the animals with Advantage or Frontline. Then i would buy a cheap flea collar and vacuum all your baseboards, floors, and upholstered furniture. I would use an airborn chemical as the last resort (not a marine tank keeper, just a vet tech).

Amp thanks man. We usually don't have a problem as we start them off each year with the advantix and it never gets this bad... however, we have had so much rain they are thick as, well, fleas.... **** nasty little buggers. I will check around for eco friendly bug killers.

We have treated with the advantage. But still seems like we are having issues. How long until it is effective?

it'll take few days. you have to remember that a flea has to bite a dog before it dies. also, it takes few days for the flea treatment to mix with the dog's oil and spread around the dog's body. i would buy the green light with the sticky stuff. it works great and fleas just go to the light and stick. also vacuum but make sure fleas don't get back out of your vacuum. that's what we did when we had the same problem. really works. also, Advantage is better for fleas than Frontline. good luck

Ask terminix how they intend to spray. I just had my house sprayed for ants, and no harm done to the tanks at all. They didnt fog, only sprayed. I do reccomend getting your house treated, fleas and there larvae are really tricky.

For the dog, go to your vet and get a capstar, should be around 5 or so bux for the pill, it will kill all the fleas on your dog, and continue to kill for 24 hours after you administer it.

Continue with the advantix you are using, it will take a while before the fleas that get on your dog are killed, It doesnt prevent them from getting on your dog so much as it kills them when they do, and BTW, the flea doesnt have to bite the dog for this to work, that would be the capstar, and some other drugs such as interceptor (sentinel) and that just sterilizes the flea doesnt kill it.

It can take around 2 months using advantix alone to clear up an infestation.

Be sure if you are vaccuming your carpets you are getting rid of the vacum bag everytime, do some research as well on the life cycle of a flea.

Also, an all natural method to help get rid of fleas. Take a pan, one that is about 2 inches deep, put water and dish detergent in it, sit it on the floor under a light such as a night light. At night the fleas are attracted to this and when they jump to get to the light, they fall in the pan of water and drown. The detergent in the water breaks the surface tension so the flea sinks. Try this in the areas of your home youre having the most trouble with.

usually exterminators spray in problem areas only with a directional sprayer. unless you plan on doing a "tent over the house, fog the to death" kind of approach, you should be okay.

express your concern to them and get it in writing that it won't harm your tanks. than, if anything happens, have your water tested and sue the punks to replace your pets.

If you break a cheap flea collar into little bits ( be careful not to create airborne dust) and put it in your vacuum bag or canister before you vacuum, it will kill the fleas that you suck up.

I have used those bug bomb fogger things that you buy at the store in my house.. in excessive amounts with my tanks present

I usually just put 1 in each room... and cover all my tanks with sheets and towels thouroughly

I have never had a fish death as a result of fumigating.. and i do it for fleas and spiders every year
