rena xp3 or eheim pro 2028

You may want to glance at the 'specifications' on them again. I wont debate the actual performance in filtering water, like you said earlier "They all serve the basic purpose of filtering your water", however in that regard I see little difference with my XP3 either. The difference is in other features IMO.

I bought a used eheim 2026 for 20 dollars. The previous owner told me he used it for three years and then had it sitting for six months without using. I had to change the o-ring for the primer (which I went to Home depot and bought one for 2 dollars). Replaced the o-ring and put the unit to work. The unit works perfect and it is super quiet. It has been over two months now and the unit is still working fine. I had two whisper HOB. I took them off. I couldn't believe how quiet the eheim is, especially compared to the whispers. This is my personal experience with a eheim. I don't have anything to say about the Rena because I have never worked with one.

I use an xp2 on my tank and I really like it. The only thing that doesn't impress me is the quality of the plastic, it seems cheap and brittle. I haven't had a single problem with it and I can't speak for eheims, my budget was way too low to afford one of them.

I have a 120 gal. and I have a choice between rena xp3 and the eheim pro2028. Which is better,does more,keep cleanest water,least trouble,etc.,etc..
I cant tell you which is better or even which has more options. The only filter I have owned, thusfar, is the xp3. With the exception of the spraybar being too long to place horizontally on an end of a typical 55g tank and the intake being a god awful shade of blue, I have no complaints at all about this filter. It's quiet, simple to maintain and does a great job of filtering my tank.

If I were to need another canister filter, I would probably buy another xp3.

Yeah, seriously, what is WITH the pukey blue intake? It would be so much less obtrusive if it were also black. I really like everything else about my XP3, though. I think it works as well as either of the Eheims I've had before, and it was significantly cheaper.

Its color coded to ease installation. You'll notice the barbed ends on the top of the canister also have one blue and one black one. But I agree, it'd be nicer if they were both black. Nothing a can of Krylon Fusion Black cant fix if you really think its that bad. I bet the blue blends in better for those with blue backgrounds in their tanks.

Eheim 2028 if you have no expenditure limit

I bought a Rena Xp3, used it for a couple of hours, returned it, bought the eheim 2028 and I'm keeping it because:
Priming: Eheim 2028 makes life so much simpler
Media: Eheim 2028 w/media has the largest surface area for biological breakdown
Noise: Eheim 2028 makes less noise than the dripping water in my tank, while XP3 is somewhat noisier
Shaking: Eheim 2028 is very stable because it is a robust design.
Piping: Eheim Quality is a 10/10, while XP3 feels like a toy, although both do the job. Eheim has awesome connectors.
Aesthetics: Eheim feels great for a good looking living room.
Flow regulation: Eheim has a clever two way (in and out) parallel flow regulatoin. While XP3 has a knob in the outlet.
Setting up: Eheim priming took me 10 min, while XP3 took me 1 hour plus a lot of floor mopping.
Get Eheim if you plan to use this canister for 5 years. Buy XP3 if you have a good furniture to hide it beneath and you don't care about the shaking and are not trying to save space. Get Eheim for peace of mind, but don't get the one with the incorporated heaters, they have a tendency to fluctuate badly as of March 2008.
