So today me and my wife went to see family. While she was at her sisters house this little girl shows up with a little baby Robin. The little girl had been down by the river playing with some other kids. They got to close to a bird nest and the parent birds started to dive at them to scare them away from the nest. The kids decided to fight back and smashed the nest. All we know is that this little girl managed to bring one of the baby birds back alive. My wife, being the healer she is took it upon herself to try to save the birds life. So now we are sitting with a baby robin and trying to figure out how to feed and care for this unfortunate little soul. I took an empty ten gal tank and put some pete moss on the bottom and I have a tight fitting screen top to keep the cats out. She is smashing up a cricket right now to try to get him/her to eat something from a dropper and we are going to provide a little bowl of water. In the morning we are going to call a friend who runs the local bird refuge and see what we can do from there. Due to it's young age, it may not be possable to re-release the bird into the wild after being raised by humans. We'll see. If we have to raise the bird as a pet we will.

Anyone know anything about caring for birds? Any advice welcome. We just want to see this little guy survive. I feal just horable for this little bird.

Well AC, thanks for reading,
Caleb

That is amazing that you guys are doing that. Kudos! Let me know how the little one does! Have you named it? You might want to feed it a little mushed up worm w/water.

Also have it drink from a straw. Just stick the straw in the water then put your thumb over the top and let small amounts into her mouth at a time.

I found this to work well when i took care of a bird my friends cat got. Unfortunately he didnt make it. The cat was pretty rough. I named him Sam.

Good Luck!!

At the store where I work, we have a powder that we mix up in warm water to feed baby parrots, but the packaging says that it's formulated for "all birds". If you have a petstore near you with birds, you could see if they carry any handfeeding mixes. We just use the little blunt oral medicine dosing syringes to do the feeding.

My cousin raised a baby Robin a few years back. She just fed it worms and kept it warm. It is very time consuming though. Her little bird made it to adult hood and once it could fly they turned it loose. It flew away and every once in a while they would see a Robin come close by (closer than wild birds usually let you get) but it never let them up real close. If it lives to being able to fly you should have no trouble releasing it and it making it as long as you feed it as it would be fed in the wild like my cousin did. As it got older she would put some dirt in a container in the cage with worms in the dirt so it learned to pick at the dirt and hunt its own meals.

Thanks everyone, We ended up taking it to the local bird rehab center and the lady that runs it informed us that it was in fact a baby cliff swallow. She said that the best thing for her to do is to find a nest with babies of the same age and put it in. The parrents won't know it's not theirs and will finish raising it. So she has the little swallow now and will take care of him. I feel much better now that he's in good hands that know how to care for him. I'm just glad we know the lady who runs the bird refuge, if not we might not have known, or found out in time, where to take him.

I hate to bash but, you would think the parents of theis children would have taken the opertunity to educate them about wildlife. Teach them that killing an animal and destroying it's home in WRONG! They did nothing! Just said, "kids are kids." and went on with their day. And we wonder why the world is so @#$%ed up.

At least one of them showed compasion for the poor thing.

Anyway, enough ranting and thanks again AC.

Peace,
Caleb

Good job Caleb!!!! Growing up I was always the one trying to save countless baby birds. My brother and I even bicycled home with a muskrat one day, riding proudly through the neighborhood with it....then we found out what it was:eek3:.

Aw, I'm glad things worked out. I adore swallows....they are really neat birds. :) And kids *smh*....they have to understand if someone tried to harm them, their parents would probably throw a fry pan or can of soda to protect them.
