The best thing is to divert it back into your sump with a T fitting and a valve than to restrict it completely.
I agree. Anytime you restrict a pump, it draws more wattage causing higher heat and decreased pump longevity.

You can restrict any centrifugal pump as long as you don't block it totally. The pump wattage will ALWAYS go down, not up. The pump will last longer and run cooler. The pump will in NO WAY work harder or be negatively effected in any way by restricting the output.
You can also divert either is fine. Diverting just uses more power.

Most people I spoke to said it would be a better idea to divert it, so that's what I'll be doing when setting up the plumbing for my tank . ..
Not that I don't believe kcress, just that I already purchased all the plumbing to make the divertion possible..

This is exactly what i did on my old reef...just diverted some back to the sump and used a ball valve to balance the flow...worked a treat!!!
I'm no expert on this sort of thing but I do have to say that goes against every other thing I've read or heard about this particular topic.
Sorry, but you may want to run a watt meter when doing this. You'll find it goes against what you just said
