I was wondering if Discus would be ok in a 55g and if so how many, also can they be with german blue/golden rams or any other cichlids? Not sure if this is the way I will go but just wondering if it would work.

Thank you in advance,

Gin

Discus, although reaching a good size, can be house in a 55g. It seems like space does not matter as much as the water quality. Probably around 5-6 would be good for that sized tank. I had mines with blue rams and they compliment each other well. What strain are you looking at getting?

I'm really not sure which one's I want yet..I really like the snakeskin ones but then the Diamonds, red marlboro & the turquoise really catch my eye also they are all so beautiful it's going to be hard to decide. By the time I really get everything ready to have them I'll figure it out I hope!

You can mix them up if you want. There are lots of people that do this. It looks very nice too and offers a lot of color in the tank. Ther is no law that says you have to stay with one strain.

you can mix them but a tank of one color is very impressive.

I have several .I have some cobalt/red, pidgeon blood and red/white diamonds.

they will be fine with rams..I keep bolivian rams with mine oh and a pair of angels.

Oh.... I didn't even think of Angels...that WOULD look great I can't believe I forgot about angels!!!! I will have a little while (about a month) to plan it all out and I am going finally get working on my 29g fig8 tank, so I am going to be doing LOTS of planning and mind changing I'm sure. OH THE FUN, I love being able to "plan" a tank!!

But right now I have to focus on what Discus I want...hey any suggestions on what sites would be best for info like pH, food, ect....there are so many places and so many have incorrect info or misleading so I was looking for places you know and trust.

Thanks so much!!

I housed my Discus with Angels and the Angels were making it hard for the Discus to eat! they were to aggressive, Discus are not great eaters any way
i had to move them(the Angels) but Rams would work, they also look great with a shoal of 6-12 Neon Tetra, or My Keyhole Cichlids do well with Discus as well...

AWWW the tetra's would look great too, maybe with some of the glolight tetras (I think that's them) the ones that look like neons but they are orange instead of read and blue.

Now I have a new thought...what if I make my 75 for the discuss...have like 6discuss, the blue &/or gold rams, and the shoal of tetras (both kinds), could I add yellow labs to this mix or would they not work?
If I use the 75 instead with this combo could I add more discuss, how many rams and what would be the best bottom feeder?

Open for ALL suggestions here. BTW I was going to use the 75 for my african cichlids.

Thanks again,

Gin

I have no issues with angels in the tank with discus.

my discus push the angels out of the way for food..especially when it's frozen bloodworm/brine shrimp(w spirulina)
if you feed the discus right they will feed on everything from flake to frozen..tho mine love tetra colorbits.

moving your discus to the 75 would be a good thing. I would probably not add yellow labs to this mix. but make the shoal of discus 7-8 with some cardinals/tetras, and 2-4 rams(depends on the sex of the rams) plenty of driftwood and plants.

Yeah I had second thoughts on the labs anyway..I just think they are a very cute fish, but with the discus, tetra and rams I think this tank will have enough going on in it. Oh, if I do decide to go with Angels would 2 be good?

As I progress and decide what I am going with for sure, I will keep ya's updated I'M SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone for all the help!!!
